I'm just curious, I'm about to go pick up a younger KA24DE to drop into my 95 240sx. My original plan included paying someone to do it. Since my current motor is OBDI and the new motor is OBDII, I plan to keep my manifolds. So then I begin to wonder... just how hard is this ?

If I unbolt the manifolds and sort of pull them aside... just how hard is it going to be to remove and replace the engine and transmission ? In the 240, there's plenty of room, and I plan to remove the radiator just for the heck of it... (the radiator cost more than the engine, I'd hate to dent it or something)

What's involved ? Remove the hood I assume, unbolt the manifolds and I assume the accessories... get an engine hoist, dunno where to bolt it up... unbolt the driveshaft I suppose and probably the transmission mount and maybe the bracket that the mount is on... and pull ?

I plan to put a new clutch, flywheel and motor (and transmission) mounts in at the same time...

As you can see, I'm kinda guessing here... if someone would spell out for me what's involved, I would appreciate it. If it's harder than I think, I'll just pay...

Thanks

remove hood, remove driveshaft, remove clutch slave cylinder, unbolt transmission mount and both engine mounts, unbolt downpipe from exhaust mani, remove intake, remove radiator and shroud, remove ps and ac, disconnect all relavant hoses and wires, hook hoist to intake and exhaust manifolds, pull.

hooking the wiring harness back up is pretty easy. i didn't label anything. it pretty much just lines up and all the connectors are different enough.

On the downside, I can't hook the hoist to the manifolds as I plan to leave them in the car.

On the upside... I shouldn't have to touch the harness, right ?

I guess I'll have to disconnect the EGR pipe though...

Use a leveler...bolt one chain to the front of the head (passenger side), one to the rear of the head (drivers side). Easy.

No, just unplug everything and sling the harness over the passenger fender, or stick it on the winshield (under the wipers to hold it out of the way).

EGR...yes, just disconnect it.

it's a lot easier to take the intake mani off when the engine is out of the car, and besides, the runners provide a great place to attach the hoist. if you leave the exhaust mani on, you wont have to disconnect the egr pipe either.

you have to disconnect the harness from all the sensors and stuff on the engine.

believe me, its a LOT better to remove the engine with the intake and exhaust manifolds...just takin out the intake manifold is a PAIN IN THE (yeh, the rearend), you have to lift the passanger side to get to some brackets, and tryin to take the bolts that go from the intake mani to the head....thats another long story.(am tryin to just take out the head of my engine since the valves are bent). i did 1 of those swaps, i have a 93 240sx, bought a 95 engine for around $300, it all connected how it was supposed to be(except for the cams, i put in s13 cam, but forgot i had to retard timing a bit, then someone else put the cams in the wrong way....and the pistons hit the valves)

I'm just about done with doing what you are planning to do (IT STARTED TODAY! WHOO!) and do what the others have said, leave the mani on!

Keep in mind that this will be slightly more expensive than you think. Fluids, the hoist, plugs, wires, micaleneous hoses, clamps... blah blah... Will run you some cash, BUT you should be able to sell off lots of stuff that you will get (injectors, cams, whatever, part the old one out!)

What am I forgetting? Oh yeah, make sure you grease up and store all rustable parts away from humidity. I should have done that to my exhaust mani bolts, and now the nuts only go on half way and I have a massive echaust leak...

Oh, and get a fsm. It will be your best friend.

Good luck, and if you need any help, feel free to shoot me a message AIM: BiggLekk

Are you guys sure the OBD1 wiring harness will work on an OBD2 engine?

Will the OBDI harness work with the OBDII engine? I've never heard of it being a problem.

It will work fine, I did the swap before. When I put my 96 KA im my 91, i did the following...First it is a good idea to get both the engines out and next to each other. That way when you swap the manifolds you will be able to put them on the other one right after you have taken it off the orginal. you are going to have to take the engine down to pretty much the block and head, that will be all you are going to use of the newer KA, all other part are going to come off of the old ka. the vacume lines can be a bit of a ***** on the intake manifold.the intake mani is about the harder part in this whole this, it is a 2 piece mani, you will need new gasket (but that goes without saying). DONT take the manifold apart keep it in one peice, it bolts at the top on the head curls around and has bolts on the block, there are a good bit of vac lines that can be a pain when putting on the new ka (they are closed in kinda)

with the exhast mani all i did was take off the heat shield and un bolt it form the head. (it kinda gets in the way when putting the engine though). I left the EGR pipe in the mani, but unbolted from the EGR

Hopefully this will help you.

I would just like to make a note. the ecu doesnt care what block or head you have just can long as all the harness connects are made in the right spots your good to go
