How was it reviewed by major auto magazines? Good marks? Complaints about power? How did it do in comparison tests vs other cars?

well i have read some old car reviews of the 240sx, for the SOHC critics complained that the car didn't have enough power, but they loved the handling of the car, for all models they liked the looks and the suspension setup of the car, they also like the reliabilty, and practicality of the car, the power is usually described as "adequate", it was really liked for being one of the remaing rwd sport compacts

when it first came out it went up pretty well against the competiton, but as it got older, and other cars got faster( prelude) it started to drop in sales,

i read a review about how the 240 was just your average import car. its engine is replaced with a less powerful one. the body normal; nothing exterior wise really looked unique. the RWD was nice but overall they called it a normal import car that is a bit expensive for the amount of power coming out. this is for the s14's. . .

Back in 1989. I remember most enthusiast automags liked it, but didn't love it. One magazine (C&D I think) called it a "satisfying" car. Not awesome or amazing, just satisfying. In a comparo test, it finished midpack. Nissan's choice of an underpowered pickup truck motor is what kept the auto rags from embracing it more. The suspension & handling were considered strengths, but the engine is what held it back to enthusiasts. That and Nissan's lack of marketing of it. The automagazines warm but not glowing reviews didn't prevent me from buying one in 1989. And I found it was underpowered yet very satisfying. I thoroughly enjoyed owning mine.

I clearly remember one review from the early years that loved it. It was either Consumer Reports or Motor Trend. They put it up against the Prelude (2.0 SI), Celica, and I think the Eclipse and one or two others. They loved it and rated it the best by far. It even had more motor than the rest. Think back 90 when they came out with the 91 models. 155 h.p. was a whole lot for a 4 banger back then (Mustang 5.0 V-8s were rated at 225 (torque's a different ballgame)). The Celica and Prelude were a good 20 or more short. RX-7s kicked its ***, but that ain't no shame...they did that to lots others too. That was a pure sports car, wheras the 240 is not.

Gotta say, the 12 valve motor is pure crap, IMAO. The DOHC beats it in every respect, reliability I think being one of the biggest.
