Find out about your local laws, IIRC California doesn't allow tint on the front windows. That being said lots of people have it and get away with it.
First, price depends on type of tint, and area. I know up in the mid-west and north west, its a lot more expensive than in sunny places like so cal and down where I'm from. The type of tint depends on metallic, ceramic, and non metallic. Metallic will hold out a lot of heat, but has metal particles suspended in the film, making it hard for cellphone signals and GPS signals to read sometimes. Non-metallic doesn't repel as much heat, but no signal interference and is cheap. Ceramic is top of the line. It repels a lot of heat and doesn't have signal interference. I got Formula 1 pinnacle ceramic done by a nation wide reputable shop with 35% front and 15% rear, rear quarter, and rear windshield done for $253.47. I got non metallic on my 00 Camaro at 15% all the way around for about $120.00.
Second, I'd go with a mild tint on the front windows since it can be kind of hard to see at night, I had 15% on my old car and it got kinda difficult when it was really dark outside IE no lights. I'd think 15 - 20% would be my choice on a Z, maybe 35% or 40% if you're worried about the po-po's.
Third, make sure the place you go to is on the up and up. Ask if you can see car's they're working on, ask about warranties, that sort of thing.
Also just incase you don't know, you can't roll your windows down for a week (I kept getting told 3 - 4 days but I like to play it safe) and you can't clean it with ammonia based cleaners like Windex. You have to use a tint safe cleaner like 20/20 glass cleaner by eagle one, or any other brand so long as it is tint safe.
Last, it's not tint that is put over taillights or headlights, it's a vinyl overlay. The only places I've heard selling them are BlueBatmobile, and Lamin-x. Vinyl will last a lot longer since it's made to be exposed to the elements and what not, thought it's applied just like vinyl.
Also, those Volks are sexy as hell, I want a set for my car. But at that price, I think I would cry for a week straight if one got some curb rash....or if it was looked at wrong.... But yes, those rims are FTMFW!
Here's what my tint looks like with direct sunlight coming in the windshield:
