I live in NYC and was wondering if anyone knows what tint percent would be sufficiently dark without having cops scratch my paint with their belt buckles when they've pulled me over and are searching my car because of my tints??

in California the rule of thumb is the darker the better lol but you can't tint the windshield and the driver/passenger windows or it has to be something like 35% on the driver/passenger windows and no tint on the windshield. not exactly sure if its 35% or what..... i just limo tinted the back 3 windows and left everything else alone

I have 35% in the front, 20% rears. Look awesome !!!. Im thinking to have 50% tint on my side mirrors too. Many folks around my town using HID with over 5000k bulbs now. I don't feel comfortable when they after me.

lol be cool man ! tint ticket is only $10-$20. Over here in CA, over 50% is illegal, but I still driving my car w/ 35% tint on my car. It's just about luck.

if a cop ever pulls you over for anything just roll down both windows as soon as he flips his lights on and then pull over..... it just doesnt work if its raining.

I would rather get my car a little wet then another ticket.

I have 25 in back and 35 in front, i want to switch to 15/25 however, the 35 is too light for me.

tickets are not expensive at all.

Depends on the car color sometimes... a white car with 5% is more likley to cause issues...

My last car had 5% all the way around... got stopped for other stuff all the time, never got a ticket for the tints...

Now im on 15% all the way around... ive gotten stopped probably 8 times in the coupe... never got a tint ticket

The factory window tint is about 72% or so, so anything darker than that can get you pulled over. I would recommend 35% if you really want tint but want to keep the cops off your back at the same time, especially in NYC

EIGHT TIMES!?!? dude . . . what are u doin lol?

I just dropped my coupe off at the tint guy, he is gona install my head, tail, and stache overlays too, i cant wait to go pick it up after work!! I got 15% all the way around. The guy honestly wasnt even willing to go darker than that haha, he does the tints and vinyls for the cops in the area so i figured I'd take his advice.

Yup that's what I picked up (35%) but with the window having a tint on it, even the 35% tint isn't legal...looks good though and not too dark to attract cops...I hope

CA law states that ANY tint on the front windows is illegal.

I have limo (5%) on all the windows in my truck...You can still see through the front windows a very little bit...basically you can barely make out features, so I'm going to take it back soon and go darker. I don't want anyone to be able to look into my truck.

I have 5% in the back and 15% in the front. Mainly because I am blind and need to be able to see out of my front windows at night. lol

Really? I thought you could tint the front window above the AS1 line?

This is from the DMV of California handbook section 26708 (c) :

(a), transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the topmost portion of the windshield if the following conditions apply:

(1) The bottom edge of the material is at least 29 inches above the undepressed driver's seat when measured from a point 5 inches in front of the bottom of the backrest with the driver's seat in its rearmost and lowermost position with the vehicle on a level surface.

(2) The material is not red or amber in color.

(3) There is no opaque lettering on the material and any other lettering does not affect primary colors or distort vision through the windshield.

(4) The material does not reflect sunlight or headlight glare into the eyes of occupants of oncoming or following vehicles to any greater extent than the windshield without the material.

(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following conditions are met:

(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent.

(2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49 C.F.R. 571.205), including the specified minimum light transmittance of 70 percent and the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as specified in that federal standard.

(3) The material is designed and manufactured to enhance the ability of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful ultraviolet A rays.

(4) The driver has in his or her possession, or within the vehicle, a certificate signed by the installing company certifying that the windows with the material installed meet the requirements of this subdivision and identifies the installing company and the material's manufacturer by full name and street address, or, if the material was installed by the vehicle owner, a certificate signed by the material's manufacturer certifying that the windows with the material installed according to manufacturer's instructions meets the requirements of this subdivision and identifies the material's manufacturer by full name and street address.

(5) If the material described in this subdivision tears or bubbles, or is otherwise worn to prohibit clear vision, it shall be removed or replaced.

35% seems to be the norm. Snobbier suburbs tend to like issuing tickets for tints above.

The first (1) through (4) is about the front windshield

the second (1) through (5) is about the side windows

Most of the time the 70% that they allow for is the equivalent to the factory window tint. Again, that's in MOST cases. Very few factory windows are completely clear and allow for 100% light to travel through.
