How critical are dents in the oil pan?

After getting a hold of an engine hoist and getting my rb20 engine set off the pallet it was shipped on I noticed a decent size dent in the oil pan. The whole engine set was resting on the pan/ transmission mount, so it doesn't suprise me that the pan was damaged. Should I worry about it at all? can I run the engine as is or should I at least try to hammer the dent out? Or should I bite the bullet and buy a new pan?sorry I don't have a better pic:

oil pan is a oil pan, so long that it seals it shoudl be fine

what you want to figure out is if it's too close to the oil pick up

if it is touching or bending it, it's not good.

just hammer it out if I were you

Mine arrived the same way for the same reason, but worse. It's pushed in about an inch and a half so I'm gonna take the time to pull it off, hammer the dent out, and make a new gasket. My gasket is a little leaky anyways, so it gives me a reason to take the pan off and assure that the pickup is okay.

So I took my oil pan off last night and my pickup is fine, but I dont know how I'm going to be able to pound out the dent. I didn't know the pan had a top baffle and it mostly covers the entire pan. I'll hopefully take some pics this afternoon over lunch and get some posted tonight.

Bronze, I would say that your oil pickup is probably okay and it might not be worth it to pull the oil pan to try to pound out the dents. Your call though.

Mine has a big dent on the bottem. I have had it running for almost 2 years now. The pickup is a round screen so it will still work with the pan against it unlike an sr20.

Here are the pics I promised. I tried to pound the dent out last night, but that is some tough iron. Plus I couldn't get a good grip on the pan to keep it from sliding around, so it is just going to have to do. I cleaned off the gasket material from the block and pan and am ready to reinstall the pan.
