How common is it for a relay to short-out or become dysfunctional?

What part of the relay is most likely to be flawed/damaged? I assume problems with wires touching at connectors etc are more common?

usually it'll just short at the inside where the relay is supposed to switch. I suspect you've been doing a bit of electrical work on the car?

Bingo on the relay, it's just a switch with a trigger.
