How close to the strut is TOO close.

Typhoon wheels, 17x8 +35 wearing 225/17 rubber, the lip of the wheel is ~5mm away from the stock strut and no portion of the tire is any closer. It looks like I could go to 245/40 rubber (same height as stock tires) and still clear, but I know it will be close. How close to the strut is TOO close? This is on the front of an S13

the origional mad tight stock ones they put on at the factory.

I guess what I'm really asking is.. As long as I can free spin the wheels when I tighten them on, there should be no other variants between the wheel and tire while driving down the road. Even if there was only 1mm between tire and strut when I first put them on, no other "dynamic" forces could cause rubbing?

yeah.

you're really going to have to use your best judgment for clearance. If it looks fine, good. It's ok if it rubs a little under load, it's not like your shock will explode or your tire will unseat.

KTS Coils with 17x9 +20 wrapped around 245/40/17 barely clears on my daily s13.

Not sure about the fitment of your potential setup on an s13, but the minimal benefit of having an extra 20mm on your front tires isn't worth it imo...unless you run a spacer which i personally wouldn't do, but that's just me...

Found a good deal on some closeout Yokahama Advan AD07 235/40 (a little wider than most 235 from what I read) and put them on last night. I might drive thru a couple of hard turns tonight to see if it rubs. just sittiing there, they clear the strut by maybe 1/3" and doesn't touch anything from full lock to full lock.

They look really nice on the rim, tread-sidewall-lip are all just about even with each other, the rubber sticks past the lip ever so slightly.
