The R34 RB26 will have a black newer style Cam angle sensor on the front of the timing cover. The R32 RB26 will have the older Mitsubishi style silver Cam angle sensor on the front. Also, usually, R32 RB26s have black valve covers and R34 RB26s have red valve covers, but of course color could have been changed at one point in the past.

What's the reason for wanting an R34 26? There is virtually no difference besides miles and a much larger price difference.

CarlH could confirm more and I'm sure others but it was shown that even some earlier R34 RB's still have the crank issue...

Im not saying that the crank collar issue isnt legitimate but.... There are alot of high HP car that never have an issue with the smaller collar. Most people can buy an RB, mod it with larger turbos and make more power on a motor with a OLD crank collar and never see an issue. Yes the contact section for the oil drive is significantly smaller but I have personally only ever seen talk about the collar, no one from what I have searched has ever posted photos of a failed collar. (which I know, "just because Ive never seen it, doesnt mean it doesnt exists") Even with the echoes of crank collar failures, Ive personally met people who thrash on the 25's and 26's with the smaller collar all day long at local drift events.

It is a high RPM issue from what I can tell, like above 8k. Which isnt so good for a stock motor drifting anyway so I recommend get it fixed if your building the motor or intended to build a higher revving motor, otherwise its not worth initially stressing over.

Just my opinion, The collar talk has always annoyed me, take from it what you want.

As others have mentioned... the crank collar issues shouldn't divert you to the R34 series motor alone. Even at the point of failure, the crank collar fix will cost you approx $200 installed. When a R34 motor will easily cost you over two times the cost of a R32 RB26. Late model R33 RB26 motors have collar fixes as well as the R34 RB26's. Some R34 RB25 Neo motors have long collars... most don't.

Here is my take on the crank collar issue. If your tearing your motor down anyways might as well do it.. If not and not making crazy power screw it, most likely wont see any issues. If you plan to make 500-600+ hp and plan to beat it a bit, I'd be considering it (especially if its a high mileage motor - more miles = more likely to be more worn) I'd never spend the coin on a r34 motor just to have an extended drive... much more practical to just modify the r32's or r33's and cheaper.
