How can you check if you need new guides?

I read on the article manager that you can check if you need new guides. It said you must take off the front cover of engine. Is the plastic covering right behind the back of the fan the front cover or does it invovle dismatling other things?

If you don't have the bible size shop manual that came with the car, you may well want to cruise ebay to see if a full size one is available. One should be doing this without the right tools, skills, some knowledge and a FSM.

Have you run the VIN at an Infiniti dealer or through Infiniti customer service for a dealer performed service history?

visually inspecting the guides is the ONLY way to know for sure. at your mileage, your on borrowed time as it is. if you plan on keeping the Q, they need to be changed now! when i bought my Q from a fellow member here, it had around 110k, he told me the guides weren't changed, but an infiniti dealer tech, told him "not to worry, you can hear when the guides are going, and yours sound fine". that was a month before i bought it. i drove the Q immediatly to get the guides changed and found the driver side was already in pieces laying in the oil pan!!!!!! i lucked out, the chain could've jumped 5 minutes after i bought it! no way of telling without looking
