How can I vertically adjust M37X headlights

I took my M37X to the dealer as they said the headlight adjustment is computer controlled. The headlights turn with the steering wheel however they appear to be set in the lowest position. The headlights shine about two car lengths ahead. Are there manual adjuster screws to bring the headlights up to better shine on the road? Can anyone advise how I can get the headlights to aim properly? Is my dealer correct in saying the adjustment is through computer? They said they are factory adjusted to be low.

Any advice would be helpful. The dealer was quick to take my money but did not offer a solution. 2012 M37X

There's a height sensor located near the left rear axle. The Nissan Consult3+ scanner has a utility for teaching the AFS controller the vehicle height, but you can also fool the AFS by simply bending the locator tab so you can rotate the sensor and change the rotational position of the linkage arm. Since you don't have any AFS warning light, to find out if the sensor is any good, disconnect the arm and move it up and down to see if the lights follow. If they do, the sensor is good and you can just change the position to get the focus where you want it. If the sensor is bad, replace it and then adjust if needed. Note that you should also check the wiring if the sensor doesn't respond, it lives in a bad place and can suffer from road-damaged wires or water intrusion into the connector. Lastly, if you do bend the locator tab, put a split or toothed lockwasher underneath the nut to make sure it can't work loose.

That's an interesting design - did not know that's how these cars worked. Wow!

I'm planning on buying a set of these headlights for my car, the website says their oem headlights just restored. On the last picture they circle what you turn to manually adjust the height of the lights

The dealer misunderstood, yes the lights have automatic leveling (all HID lights have electronic leveling because of some kind of rules) but that is to adjust as you drive and as you carry people. The static adjustment (normal level) is done with a screw and the link is in the post above mine.

Open exterior lighting system and go to EXL-133 in the service manual (for q70 2015 but I’m guessing it’s the same for all M models).

I misunderstood then, you seemed to indicate that the lights were stuck down with no vertical movement. If that's the case you should still check the sensor before using the mechanical adjustment, because it probably isn't working.

FYI, there are tons of Nissans and Infinitis with HID headlights but no leveling. Whoever told you that is wrong.

100%. I wish my car had auto-leveling. It has AFS (side to side during slow turns) but that's it. Factory HID.

In Canada they all have electronic leveling… either through a switch or through the little sensor in the back to prevent blinding drivers when you load the back of the car. I thought the US was the same

When you turn on on your car it doesn’t do a little dance either headlights? (Down - up)

Nope. Some US cars do, like my brothers Audi and some Lexus' I've seen but not my '11 M56x.

That’s weird , next time you’re under it check for the leveler sensor. If you have AFS and HID lights it should be there. I only looked at the q70 facelift fan but according to the service manual… it doesn’t say Canada only

He's right, Ilya, I checked several EWD's going back and the leveling setup is integral with AFS. If you have one, you should have the other. Your ride may just have an inoperative sensor.

Hmm - interesting. I got this car with 32kmi on it back in Nov. 2014 and this has never worked. AFS has always worked at certain speeds (I don't remember when it does or doesn't trigger) but never auto-leveling during initial start up.

This sensor is on the left rear axle? Any chance there is a picture or diagram in the FSM?

This car is the gift that keeps on giving...just got paddle shifters installed, thinking of doing the aroma cartridge HVAC thing, now this...this was an amazing vehicle that Infiniti should have kept producing. It's a shame they cancelled it.

This is from the online ESM:

You can find the R&I on EXL-128 and other info elsewhere in the EXL section:

The anti-rotation tab I was referring to fits into the hole in the frame as indicated. Bending it flat allows you to trim the aim without having to computer-initialize the AFS Controller:

Unless I'm blind, I don't think I have this gizmo. So it can be added?

I can't access your pics here on the shop comp, I'll look when I get home. That's weird, because the ESM doesn't show the AFS and leveling being separable. Might just be a Japlish problem, I dunno.

This arm, bracket, and harness all look to be in the right spot.

Hmm, okay I'll focus on that area and take a better picture/video tomorrow. This is intriguing!

Yep that’s the sensor and small little arm - it makes minute adjustments as you drive but mostly when the back is loaded. You’d never notice it to be honest

Ahh, so you're saying my headlights would aim down if I had a cow in the back seat causing my car to do a "Carolina Squat"? :gapteeth: This isn't the kind of adjustment that would happen at bootup like some luxury brands where it the lights go up, down and side to side during the first 15-20 seconds?

Thanks for all the info fellas you are awesome! My vehicle was hit by an elderly female in a parking lot. I wonder if the sensor was damaged in that incident and repaired by insurance. I do recall when I first got my car my lights did a little dance and do not do that movement on startup. They just move from side to side with the steering wheel.

That little dance is what I'm referring too...didn't know that was a thing on any M or Q70 model going back to even like 2006 and the Y45 platform.
