how can I tell if my infiniti is californian or federal for the ecu?

I need to find out what my 91 q45 is californian or federal, how can I do that.Thanks Mike

I think Wes can tell you from the VIN.

Normally, if what I remember is correct, there's a sticker under the hood saying it meets California emissions standards.

no wonder why my car is not starting with the ecu's that I have. The car I have is california model and I have federal ecu's in it!!!!Thanks Mike

That should not matter... I have a 90Cal with a 93Fed ECU... no problems there. The only difference between the two cars is the EGR temp. sensor (which is ignored by the federal ECU), and a different catalyst part number... otherwise the cars are identical. I might be concerned if you put a California ECU in a Federal car (it would be looking for the EGR temp. sensor circuit that's not there) but not vice versa.

Dont forget about the extra temp sensor under the plenum (in the Y).... Either way, theyre cross compatible.....
