I have a '95 240sx that is idling in drive (with brakes applied) at about 500 rpm. This seems very low, how can I increase it?

there is a screw behind the intake collector, its in the idle control unit. turn it to make the idle go up or down. you may have to disconnect the tps, i dont remember if you have to on the DOHC but i always do it on mine

So you're saying I may have to disconnect the TPS in order to make the adjustment, then reconnect?

warm up the car, turn off. disconnect tps sensor, start back up. adjust screw to 700rpm or wherever you want it. turn off, reconnect tps. start again and you should be golden. HTH

Ok, so here's the situation:

When the car (an automatic) is warm, it idles in Park or Neutral at around 650-700 rpm. When I drop it into drive with my foot on the brake, it falls to 500 rpm. When I adjust the idle in the way you describe, I'm assuming you want me to do it while the car is in Park or the EBrake is pulled in Neutral.

The reason I want the idle in Drive to be higher is because I recently installed NISMO motor mounts and a Hotshot Header when I rebuilt my KA and now the header sits really close to the footwell. I can feel it knock and vibrate against the footwell under hard acceleration and when I've been driving for more than 10 minutes, if I come to a stop at a light and the car idles at 500 rpm or so, it starts to knock against the footwell rapidly until I either get going again or put it into neutral and sit there.

I'm guessing the low idle in Drive is causing a vibration in the engine which is leading the header to knock against the footwell like it is.

Any thoughts? Should the idle be the same regardless of being in Drive, Park or Neutral, assuming I'm not going anywhere? Also, the knock ceases when I let up off the brakes and the car begins to roll slightly, even if it is rolling at 500 rpm or so, which is even more strange to me.

I'd appreciate any ideas.
