hello all, in addition to my love of 240's I also have and know a good bit about subaru and have access to several VF 39 turbos for a good price. I searched about and couldn't find any info on the board about that particular turbo(in reference to the KA) and unfortunately don't have excel on the computer I'm on so I couldn't map it through the useful tools I have found on this board. So I was hoping someone could help me out in deciding if this turbo is useful to the KA_T community. BTW: the VF 39 is the turbo off of the 2.5litre STI. as a reference it pushes about 250 on the dyno with this turbo stock, though I know the turbo is nowhere near maxed out at the stock level. thank you, Greg.

It will work well, do you have the exact specs on the turbo?

well, that's the hard part. IHI doesn't seem to provide the specs in a way I can follow. I know that they have classifications on their website with a compressor map that graphs all of their turbos on one map so it makes it funny to look at. also they don't call it a VF they call it the RHF series I believe and give them different #'s that so far most people seem to just guess on which one is the VF: 22,30,34,39 etc. I know that the 34 is the same turbo except it is ball bearing so if I could find a map for that then I would be in the ball park (or I can just get a 34 b/c it's BB) I am also looking at the VF 30 as well. the reason being is that I can get all of these turbos for about $400 bucks and think that's pretty good. so if someone(smarter than me) can help me figure this out it may add another turbo option to the growing list. the only potential downside is the flange needed but I'm sure it can be worked around. thanks for your help. Greg

very nice indeed, well I'm sure I won't be the first to do it but I think I'll try. to all of you that know more about the KA than me(that's all of you ) feel free to chime in on recommendations. I know that clearance is an issue, deciding on top or bottom mount etc.. for those that don't know the flange of those turbos (in the sube app) is a five bolt that looks like a rectangle with one of the corners clipped. If it helps to know I'll be planning on an external WG. and a custom DP/exhaust (for fitment sake). hopefully I will get to do this on a motor outside of the car b/c my friend is going to the dark side and I may get his motor (KA24de). I am real impressed with all the custom stuff you guys have done and again appreciate your level of knowledge. Greg

p.s. I already have a list of needs based off of everyone's great info and a few of my own ideas. but the other thing I'm curious of is if the WRX injectors will fit b/c they are 420cc and I believe they are top feed/HI. please correct me if I'm wrong. but if they will work(and as XcreatureX knows the sube guys all but give away their stock injectors) so that would be a great item as well.

edit: I read WD's great injector post already, I just need to know if that means they fit. luckily my wrench hand works better than my typing hand.

edit again: since the turbo inlet on the hot side is fed by an up-pipe and not directly by a whole exhaust manifold I can get ahold of an up-pipe cheap maybe have the flange cut off and then welded onto a JGS log or some other config.

like i said its going to be tricky..the inlet isnt a common one...if you can weld you can probably make something to work, but you are going to be close to something not to much room to move around in there. and yes REX injectors are dirt cheap, but i beleave i read that they dont fit...i did a bunch of searching cause i was thinking of using them.

I am im the middle of this almost exact install. I am using a stock WRX turbo (TdO4). If you want to know more, search for my threads but im telling you right now... your better off just getting a regular turbo so you can skip a whole lotta fabrication. For a downpipe, instead of somehow custom making that ***** of a flange, I ordered an APS HFTO downpipe, and as a bonus, the 240 O2 sensor fits it. The up-pipe, however, is a different story. I had to completely fabricate this myself. Ill try and get some pictures of it, but right now its made out of PVC piping and LEXAN, so I can give it to a machine shop and tell them to make it out of metal. If you want to know more, my aim is JamesS15.
