The title explains my question here. As (i think) most of yall know, im new to the 240SX group, having domestic classic cars before. So, i really don't know a whole lot about a turbo, i click more with the supercharger/boring, stroking, all that good stuff.

SOOOOO.... What is the best turbo that would be in the price range for me (student working part time)

Without knowing your exact goals for the car, it's tough to really recommend anything. If I had to narrow things down, I think most guys running a turbo on the KA24DE engine are using some kind of Garrett T3/TO4E turbo. Opinons on trim and A/R vary depending on who you ask, individual goals, etc.

There are a few people actually making good power on a small T-series turbo too. You can pick up a cheap SSAutochrome manifold on Ebay and a used T25 turbo from someone selling one here on NICO.

96240SX41 :

I too come from a background of classic V8's, so I know where you are coming from. A turbo is a very different beast than a SC. Not in boost, since forced induction is largely forced induction, but in the way they create that boost. Being belt driven, a superchargers pumping action is directly related to the speed of the crank. This makes it easy to predict the level of boost and then build and tune to that level.A turbo extracts energy from the exaust to give boost. Because this is indirectly related to crank speed, a given turbo can provide a varying amount of boost with differing characteristics based on a multitude of features. To list a few:Length of exaust runners to the turbo.Whether the exaust pulses are timed to arrive sequentially ("equal length").The trim of the turbine. The trim of the compressor. The AR of the turbine "snailshell"The AR of the compressor....on and on.So without a specific goal, it becomes very difficult to say "The disco potatoe is the turbo for you", even if you hear that from a lot of kit companies. It is obvious that you know engines, so doing a little research on turbos should be fun for you and I bet you will pick it up darn fast. So look around and ask questions. This board is great for this. Try the KA-T forum. Also consider picking up the book "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. Good stuff there.

ham, I think your totally wrong with that statement. If he were to get the turbo set down, CORRECTLY, and run like 8psi with proper fuel managemnt. He won't have problem and the only thing he will have to afford is maintience such as oil chnages and putting 93 octane gas in his car. WHich can be done with a part time job.

who said as a student working part time you cant afford a turbo? especially in college its great free money from fafsa. and as a high school student you dont have to drive very far and limiting yourself from spending on other things a student can save anywhere from 400-1grand a month+. the 240 is considered a cheap car, if youre going SR the stock turbo is efficient until you start changing other stuff, if your egoing KA the greddy is pretty cheap or you could use a t25 if youre poor. a lot of students are balling so you could get a hks gt-rs or a 2835~ turbo

sheesh! I don't know what job you're working at but during my high school career, saving $300/month was about the best that I could get (normally it was more like $200)... That's with me working about 18 - 20 hrs. a week and having to pay for gas, fixing my car (and paying back my mom for it), cell phone and car insurance.... so there wasn't much money to be had for turboing my 240.... (although it didn't help that I had to get my transmission rebuilt... $1200 of my hard work gone)

before i got paid about 725 anhour and i got off school at about 1 before i took the 6or 7am class before 1st period. worked from like 1:30-7 so yeah haha thats about i could pull about 800 before tax and during senior year i left at 11something-12 because i only had 4 classes and i worked evenmore. damn thats harsh transmission rebuilt =/ shouldve just got a 98~ ka transmission for a couple hundred and half of my high school years i didnt drive so i walked haha worked for a while, yeah i pay for the cell phone and my full coverage too.

now im in college i have even more days to work but damn some of my friends in college get about 1700$ from fafsa quarterly for 3 quarters a year. thats after tuition too so basically they inherit 5grand a year without doing a thing. yeah its not hard to get money from fafsa even if your family makes a lot of $$$ theres ways around it. =) and theyre smart so they take classes where they dont need to buy text books or the text book for the classes are very cheap. we stay away from biologys and sciences those thick mofos cost a lot.

so its like after buying books the whole year they still have 4k from fafsa +whatever they make working and a whole summer to work full time. by the time theyre done with college their cars look so crazy. i see some spoon integras/civicsand jdm everything 240s

Dang... I need to find out some of those 'tricks' to get more from fasfa.... that reminds me... I need to renew my registration... CRAP! and even after the fasfa stuff I still have to pay like $3000 per semester... and most of it is me taking out a loan... and it's not like my mom makes much money either... like barely even 'middle class' so she's not helping to pay for my schooling either... and my dad just refuses to help (after my parents got divorced) soooo I just hope that I can get my education and get a good paying job after graduation..... oh the joys of college... I'm glad to hear that you have had your successes!
