before I start I've searched so don't give me that BS

I have a hotshot header on my 96 240sx, and it removes the first cat, which is the real cat, as you know the 2nd one is just a hollow tube.

so check engine light's on, and I'm really hesitant to spend alotta $ on an aftermarket cat right now.

Do you guys know any others ways to pass emissions?

The way I see it I will pass the visual exam for the cat thanks to the hollow "cat" but when they plug into my obdII port an error code will show up. i was thinking if I unplug the battery cables and clear the ECU, it will buy me some time before the check engine light comes on again.

so hypothetically, if I go to emissions w/ engine light off temporarily and no cat, will I pass?

BTW I live in GA

mil eliminators do not work on the 96 240SX.the computer will not recognize them.

as for passing emissions, you will not pass the visual inspection without a cat. They will look.easiest way to do it is just to cough up the cash and get a cheap 2.5" cat, and stick it on there.

The 2nd cat is a dummy. If emission is an issue you might as well change the dummy into a hi-flow cat. The only thing is that you might as well change the whole piping up to the dummy cat back, since your gonna have to move the 2nd 02 sensor thats located before the dummy. The o2 sensor is located on the piping between the real and fake cat. Since your replacing the dummy with a real cat, you'll need to move the sensor after it.

take it to an exhaust shop, they will get it all up and running for you.

If you clear the codes and try to pass the inspection, the scan tool will pick that up and fail the car. Have someone read the codes and find out exactlly what the code is for. If the code is for the cat, you will have to install a convertor.

the code is 2nd o2 sensor ... i think its because the hotshot headers remove the primary cat, which means there's no cats between 1st and 2nd o2 sensor... the 2nd cat comes after the 2nd o2 sensor..

no, only S14s have OBD II, and 2 O2 sensors, there's no problems with 2 O2 sensors on the S13 header since the S13s only have 1

The job of the the second o2 sensor is to moniter the convertor and tests its' functioning. This is part of the OBD2 systems ability to self test for pollution control. If the second sensor reads that the convertor is not working(or in this case missing) the MIL comes on. The only legal way I know to correct the situation is to replace the convertor.

ok if you have s14 w/ hotshot headers what you need do is (this is according to hotshot, on theiwr website).... relocated the 2nd o2 sensor behind the 2nd cat... so the readings on the 2 sensors will be different... hopefully this will help you pass smog... HOtshot sells this kit for $15 plus shipping that includes a plug to plug the old 2nd o2 sensor hole and wires for extending the o2 sensor and a thing that is the new 2nd o2 sensor fitment (i tihnk you just drill a hole behind the cat and fit the thing in)...hope this helps, im trying it out to see if it'll eliminate the light, i think it sohuld..

Sorry for draggin up a old thread..just wanted to find out if this worked to get rid of the check engine light or not. Was looking into getting the headers but was hesitant cuz I'd be irritated with the light.

Thanks for any info.
