This should be specified in your owners manual under maintenance. Generally though, I'd only replace after inspecting.

Hey Val. I think hose replacement isn't a maintenance item, it's a repair, so there is no list of hoses or mileage. Take a look in the manual though, I could be wrong.

I know rubber doesn't last forever (maybe 7 years) and most hoses are mostly rubber. There is a rule of thumb that people have saying to replace hoses at 4 years, because they are subject to chemical and heat exposure and you want to be safe. I know for sure that many 'normal' people don't actually do that, especially with all those rubber vacuum lines stashed way inside the engine bay. I've replaced hardened hoses that were 20 years old, not because they failed, but because I was already in there doing other things. Others say, when working in an area on other maintenance, replace the hoses since you're in there. So, you get your coolant flushed at say 100,000, maybe replace those coolant lines. Having your throttle body cleaned? Maybe replace PCV, valve cover and vacuum lines nearby. I kind of agree with that and it falls in line with what Ilya says, because you're in there and you are actually inspecting the hose.

I'm not saying to not ever replace your hoses but I have a 1988 Civic that has the original hoses on it. They last at least 10 years.

Yep, had the same thing happen on a 1992 Subaru Legacy I had when I was 17. Smoked like a mother lol.

Me too. Sprung a leak on an upper radiator hose. It made a steady but very thin stream of coolant onto the hot engine and smoked pretty bad. I pulled over, found the leak and taped it up to drive home. I replaced the hoses in that area. The tape didn't seal it, it just redirected the coolant stream away from my engine so it wouldn't be so stinky smokey and steamy.

You were luckier than me. Also an upper hose, but mine had a huge hole in it. Took 10 guys to push it up a hill into a parking lot from the light I was on (traveling with a bunch of my buddies so they all pulled over) and then like 4hrs for me and my brother to drive it home (20 miles) because we had to stop every so often to fill it with water and let it cool down.

I always asked specifically to have the hoses and belt checked at each oil / filter change at the dealer. Each time the reply was "looks ok".
My car is going on 9 years and 90,000 miles now so I just asked them to replace both. I'm doing a long trek up to the north next month and the it was time to do the flush anyway. They gave me a break on labor since they were already working on the radiator area. Now there is no need to worry that I have the belt or a hose go titz up whilst in the middle of nowhere.
