I have just picked up a LSD from a British 200SX. The diff looks just like the one on my s14 but it has 2 lines which go into the cover. Does anyone know what there for? one hose connects to a tube which has a filter on the end of it on the inside of the cover.

Sounds like a breather hose for the diff. I've seen them on Land Cruiser diffs, and some older International and Blazer diffs also.

I know one is a breather but what about the others why is one connected to a tube which has a fine mesh filter on it?

I believe the 300ZX in the US had a diff cooler. It was external. It is possiblt the car you pulled the diff from had a similar system.

European spec 200SXs have an external oil cooler for the differential. Those lines are the input and output that go to it, unless you have the cooler just loop them together with a short piece of hose.

Will that provide adequate cooling? It would stand to reason, that if it's designed for use with an external cooler, that it might need one to function properly.

There's an electrical oil pump mounted near the diff, it gets it's signal from the left switch(backside of diff). Hope this helps.

why does this diff need a oil cooler when the others dont?

The diff is the exact same R200V unit we get, Euro-spec cars apparently got the cooler for sustained high speed driving on long roads, like on the Autobahn. There's no need for it either way, if you're worried about cooling get a Z32 NA rear cover and use it, it's slightly larger for more oil capacity and has cooling fins on the bottom portion of it. I've never heard of a R200V giving out unless it was pushing more than 700rwhp, so you're safe.
