Is there a preferred type of hose clamp that I should be using?

It depends on what type of hose it is (Coolant, Air or Fuel) and how hard it is to get to the clamp. I would go with aircraft grade clamps if you can find them.

Air hoses i just used regular hose clamps from like AA. Most of the connection points have an enlarged ring around the metal reciever type thing so the hose wont come off as long as its clamped and as long as its on tight you shouldn't have to worry. The fuel and coolant i used "plumbers" clamps which are very durable and unlike the buncha wire clamps you found underneath the hood that eat right threw your hoses after age. Get rid of ALL those, they disgust me. I got the "plumbers" clamps at home depot. I use them in quotes because i'm not sure exactly what they are called but if you go in there they have a nice selection. I would go to a local hardware store before the depot... HOME DEPOT BLOWS!

I have no problem with the stock clamps, but if you want something nicer, I would recommend ABA hose clamps. http://www.ultimategarage.com/abaprice.html

There is a new type of hose clamp called the Flexi-Clamp. It is made of strong polymers, no metal parts. This clamp is re-usable, no-rust, non-conductive and will tighten to 75 psi. Come watch the video:

Thanks for the information. About the best solution I can find around here is to use an industrial grade stainless "shielded or lined" clamp. The shielded or lined clamps have an inner band to prevent damage to soft hose material.

I am disappointed to see the AACA specify on printed page 24 of the guideline manual (Engine article #1) that "All radiator and hose clamps must be as provided by the manufacturer." So if hose clamps become an AACA violation for the car someday, then I can regress to manufacturer style only for any visible radiator/heater hoses.

Also, I hope to use the Ultimate Garage ABA rubber sleve clamps for securing any wiring or lines to prevent direct contact with a metal surface.
