IMO, Nissan actually dropped the hp on the Maxima in order to give a better edge to the Altima as it is now Nissans "4-door sports sedan" as was released with the coupe, thus increasing more interest in the Alty.
Why the Maxima CVT would seem to accelerate faster than the A/C I have no idea as it is rated 0-60 in 6.3 seconds vs the Alty sedan at 6.0 and the coupe at 5.8
