Ok, so I popped the Vavle cover. Replaced the gasket, removed the upper timing chain guide. They guide had wear on it (see pictures above). The chain appears to be in good condition. There was no metal fragments, debree or chunks of oil found in the the engine.

The engine idles at about 1,400 RPMS. It revs fine and fast. The noise stays constant if I hear correctly regardless of the engine. Belts and what not also seem to be fine. Fan spins fine. I'm at a $#%$king loss here. Engine has oil from what I can tell, although its old.

I think I'm going to add some seafoam to the crankcase (valve cover right?) and see if that helps. Maybe the chain-tensoner is gummed up. I'm told seafoam will help clear it out. No engine light either.

okay, what happened leading up to this?

because it really sounds like you spun a bearing, but its hard to tell from jsut those short videos you know?

i didnt idle higher when i psun a bearing, but it did run and rev fine, just power production was down a very little bit, and that noise was constant.

it sounds like a hammer on an anvil does it not?

i cant really tell anything from the pictures, but i dont want to scare you. it could jsut be that a guide has broken and is causing that problem. i noticed you still have that upper guide, that should have been removed long ago, but thats probably not the problem.

so it could be a spun bearing, broken guide, or something entirely different that is too hard to hear from thsoe clips. if you could, definately let us know more about how it feels, drives, happens, what work you did to it leading up to this, and how/when this started happening.

Ok, its at my parents house now. (I live in an apt).

Ok, was just in the shop two weeks ago. Got a new water pump. I replaced the radiator hoses as well. It has 115k on it. Other than that it had the rattle from the chain rubbing on the guide.

I was planning on taking the guide out sunday, chaning the oil and putting in my new valve gasket.

Anyway. Didn't get around to it. Did not touch the car at all sunday. Today I fire it up to go to school and guess what... it sounds like a coffee pot firing up only mechanical.

I removed vavle cover to see if the chian broke, or the guide broke et al. There is no debree or anything that would indicate something is wrong under the vavle cover. I then reinstalled all that and shot those videos you see. The chain now rattles more, and the noise is still there.

I drove it to my parents house, (more space, better lighting and jackstands). It runs just "fine", drove just fine and didn't give me any problem other than the noise. The noise is kinda random, not perfectly repetive, it comes and goes when you rev, and gets faster when you rev but not louder.

Its coming from lower and towar the back of the engine bay. You can sometimes feel it though the shifter, but its not the transmission. Its also not the exhaust.

How bad is a bearing? I know a guy right now that has a SOCH and trans for $300-400 still in car and in perfect running order, although that is absolute last resort.

Problem was a spun rod bearing.

What did it cost to get it fixed?

when i spun my bearing it was on start up. im sure you heard a short high pitched noise like a belt squeek.

anyways, i never got to fixing it, as the crank requires work and i already had KAs. i bought a KA for 200, and then bought it all new crank and rod bearings for about 150 i think. but its pretty much something you'd rather swap motors for.

ah the fun sound of a spun bearing. Best part is when u pull the oil pan off and find gold!!!! (aka metal chips everywhere)

sorry, that blows...ive been there done that.

even if you rebuild urself u are still looking at:

-possible damage to the crank...if ur lucky a machineist can polish it, if not time for a new one-all new bearings, rod and crank-posibility of damage to the rods, machinist mgiht be able to fix it, otherwise time for new ones-the piston might also be hitting the top of the head, causing damage to the piston/valves, or head surface-the cylinder walls may be beaten up-the oil pump needs to be completly washed out/replaced-the entire block should be washed out-u might need a new oil strainer if urs is filthy

good luck, all you can do is pray that not too much damage was done. for me i had to get new bearings and crank, but the rods and everything were fine.

yeah, if it sounds like you have a gnome with an aluminum baseball bat in your engine bay, it's a spun bearing. The best way I found to fix it was to pick up another ka in my area and swap 'em out.
