Hello Everybody,

I'm leaning towards maybe it's the clock spring but everything I read says that that usually means everything in the steering wheel goes dead. My horn works.
The radio buttons haven't worked for a while. I just happen to notice that when I was checking the code for the airbag light flashing that the cruise control switch is also throwing a fault, And in fact does not work.
The horn works, And all the buttons illuminate when the headlights are on like they should.

Is this still most likely the clock spring?
Rockauto doesn't have any in stock...
What other diagnostics can I perform?
Codes:
B1054-00
P1564

I doubt it's related what the car does Keep insisting it Can't read my key either.
Fuses for the airbag, BCM, And intelligent key, have continuity and look fine

Clocksprings usually fail linearly across the ribbon, a conductor on one end parts and then the rest follow over time, pop-pop-pop. What you're seeing is typical. It's the clockspring, they just haven't all popped yet.

So last time my blower motor went and I had to remove the gas and brake pedal. This time the clock spring goes and I have to remove the steering wheel.
I think Nissan is just trying to scare me.

I remember you helped me out a whole whole lot previously so thank you for that and thank you for this as well!

PS - Your keyfob issue definitely won't have anything to do with the clockspring. If the battery is fresh, try bending the metal fingers on the positive contacts slightly upward to get more spring pressure. On a 13 year old ride, it's also possible your fob just has a dying transmitter.

Nissan steering wheels are easy-peasy, it's the spring-type airbags which are a little dicey. The only hard part on yours is that you may not have the right tool, the bag is held on with torx security screws (T40 I thnk). Make sure the road wheels are straight ahead before you begin. Ground yourself to the chassis to discharge any static before handling the airbag. Once the bag is loose, detach the horn wire and then use a knife-tip to pry up the latches on the bag connectors. They'll pop right out once the latches are lifted. Then there's one nut holding the wheel on. I've only once ever needed a puller for a Nissan wheel, just put some hate into wiggling it and it will pop off. It will already have matchmarks, but they're not usually in an exact line, pay attention to which way it misaligns so you don't remount the wheel one spline off. The biggest thing to remember is to leave the plastic centerlock from the manufacturer on the clockspring until you're ready to use it, so it can't spin accidentally. One turn off center and the new clockspring will snap the first time you turn the wheel all the way.

I had a cheap eBay clockspring in my old Elantra beater for over four years without any issues. It outlived the poor car.
Most of that stuff is made in China or Mexico anyway.

So I'm taking off the light switch and wiper switch and there's goo and I mean like a good bit of goo inside the pin connector as well as towards the front where it makes contact with the housing.

Is this supposed to be in here?

The new clockspring is 100% dry

Yeah, those switches usually have a crapload of dielectric lube inside to keep the contacts happy. It's normal for quite a bit of it to leak out over time. No worries about that.

One of the mechanic videos on YouTube said that the car would need to relearn its steering positioning?
Looks like only one of them said it though I watched like six

Technically you're supposed to recalibrate the SAS, but in practice the tolerances on the plastic parts are so close that they rarely change by more than a degree or so. That's well within the ABS's ability to cope. So unless you get an ABS lamp or some weird behavior out of the wheel actuators, you should be able to call it good.

Good work! :dblthumb:

Yep. The chintz ones are usually okay, but it sounds like you didn't get lucky.

On the other hand, now you know how to do the job, and you can go through about 10 eBay clocksprings before you reach the cost of the OE part.
