Alright guys, I need some facts: How much energy does it take to run a computer 24/7? I have a roomate that refuses to turn off his computer EVEN WHEN HES NOT HOME...which is 90% of the time! AND, he doesnt help clean up AT ALL, AND he argues about bills.

SO, if you all get help me find some facts about that comp thing, then i would be muh appreciative.

Oh, and i live with one other roommate that is really cool, we both get along fine, its just this one that pisses us off!Tyler

Generally the new computers have 250-300 volt power supplies. If that helps any.

I just love to crunch numbers, and I'm a semi-nerd with computers, so off I go...Basic computers use 250 watt power supplies; the newest ones are 400 watts and more. Don't forget the monitor! Let's assume (reasonably) the entire setup sucks 450 watts (or about 8, 60-watt light bulbs). Multiply that by (24 hours/day) X (30 days/month) = 324 KW-hrs/month. Where I live I pay a baseline of about .13 per Kw-hr, so in a month, that computer setup would cost me $42. Don't forget rates are usually tiered (like income tax)...the more you use, the more it costs per KW-hr.

Yeah, that's a lie. Depending on the monitor, even in standby mode it sucks up to 37cents a day. Think if you got some crazy gaming machine with a killer graphics card and power sapping CPU with some 20" monitor...wow.With my first roommate I purchased the first Playstation and Grand Turismo. We played SO much our electric bill doubled that first month we had it. It makes that much of a difference.Good roommates are hard to come by, good luck and don't let the little things get to ya too much. It'll all compound together until you're praying for the lease to be over.

When he leaves turn it off. If he complains tell him that he can start paying an extra $45 towards the electric bill and then you wont have a problem. If you want to get dirty start sending out his email addy to all kinds of spam places to flood his mailbox.

If the lease is in your name you can tell him he has 30 days to get out if he doesn't straighten up. If both of you are on the lease play dirty and refuse to pay any more bills. Is the electricity in your name? If it is ignore that. But if it's in his name don't pay it but tell him first. He wants to play hard you play hard.

If he doesn't want to clean up NO Problemo. take all of his dirty crap (dishes included) and throw it in his bedroom. If he bishez tell him he's acting like a child so you have to treat him like one.Disclaimer: if he can kick your as$ ignore this suggestion. that would bring you to option two; tell him you are hiring a maid (once a week) to come and clean up and he has to fork out half the bill since he doesn't clean up.

If Goodbar6 was a tooth-chipper he wouldn't be posting this. He just wold have said this and that will change and Pig Pen would have said ok. Is it tough being a Beatch Goodbar? Your internet buds can't help with this one. Tell Sloppy Joe that you have a problem and don't sugar coat it. He obviously has no respect for you and couldn't give a used condom about what you think. If things don't change..step out of your panties pull your hoop ear-rings off and do what men do. A good skull cracking is the best ice breaker. But I'm not stable...:eyecrazy

If all else fails...piss in one of his two liters of soda or in his 1/2 gallon of milk. Fill his water container with toilet water. He does have separate food right? Stick a few pieces of his sandwich bread in your panties for about 15-20 minutes, don't forget to rotate and shuffle them when you put them back in the bag ( he won't notice the flatness). It'll make you feel better and does wonders for stress (so I've heard)!!

I sure don't do that anymore. They really take a lot of power.

here is a idea , drive the bastard off heres how you do it :

first everytime you go to that bathroom come out with chocolate smeared all over your face and pretend to smoke a katchup soaked tampon ...while in bathroom deliver a sermon (southern baptist style) begging the demons to come out ....

start locking out all the channles on your tv excpt the channel that has barney and freind and mr rogers......

play "oops i did it again" by brittney spears contunosly , matter of fact play it while watching mr rodgers , tape Mr rodgers so it can be reviewed many times a night.

now this one will take some balls , every night you and the other roomate you have should lock yourselves in the bathroom and make moaniung sounds , then pretend to beat him senseless and have him pretend to like it .

only wear yellow rain poncos with dark sunglasses , always make weird ticking packages to be sent to his mother ....

this should get rid of him or put you in the funny farm , either way you wont have to worry about him being around....

and remember , computers make wonderful pool toys

computers do have larger power supllies but they do not suck that much power all the time, monitors use almost no power, same as tv's .my friend works for an ISP and they have Hundreds of computers in thier office and he is a tech there. he said they do not use lots of power when just sitting there. the only thing using power is the harddrive spining and the power to your mother board. there is no way that a computer costs $45 to run a month?

my bill for my 2 bedroom duplex manufactured in the 1920's in the middle of the summer with the ac running all the time is only $100. there is no way that my computer generates half my power bill..?

your fiends computer doesn't use all the power, the fridge, water-heater, stove top & oven, and anything with a big motor, or things like hair dryers, are going to be your main 80% of your bill.i had an apartment that i left the ac off in the middle of winter and shut off at the breakers everythign except the fridge. and when i came back almost 3 weeks later (so only 1 week of whole power use) my power bill was 36 dollars. so it does take allot to power a fridge esspecially in the summer.

a few ideas 1. SPAM. you could request info on everything from gay p0rn to Martha Stewart to fill his inbox. 2. Some computers have settings that shut things off if they're idle for so long. 3. You can just turn it off yourself. 4. Unless it his apartment, you could kick his a** out and find another roomate...

Quote »your fiends computer doesn't use all the power, the fridge, water-heater, stove top & oven, and anything with a big motor, or things like hair dryers, are going to be your main 80% of your bill.[/quote] Yea, i know that. The whole reason why i was asking this is because he refuses to help out in the situation...no matter how little or how much it adds every month to the power bill, he could care less. Now that wouldent bother me too much if he was home to use it, but he is home from around 6:00pm to 9:00pm and that is it. He doesnt even sleep here. Thats 3 hours of actual computer use out of the 24 hour day. Seems like a useless way to add to the power bill dont ya think?

And violence is a horible way to solve this kind of problem. Although it does make me smile :D :D.

Hopefully he will see that doing 2 minutes of dishes once in a blue moon, and vacuming once every month isnt going to kill him. Heck, me and the other roommate do dishes EVERY night, and we vacume at least once a week.

It all comes down to a mutual respect thing. I hope he will be able to realize that being a roomate comes with responsibilities!

ANYHOO, sorry for the long post, but this has really been stressing me out.

Here's the solution in our condo: We both keep our computers on all the time :)

But even with that our electric bill is not that much more. We have a stoneage refrigerator that pigs out more than a depressed Ricki Lake. Plus we tend to stay up late with the TV and lights on. Electric bill comes to $50-65 /mo. Does a computer use power? Yes. Is it as bad as you guys say? No.

My question is WHY does he leave the computer on? You haven't mentioned why. I leave my computer on because I am on the Internet serving files or downloading. If I'm not doing anything, I turn it off. If he's downloading or waiting in queue, I could see why he's loath to turn it off. But if his computer is not doing anything I see no reason why it has to stay on.

At any rate, the computer is the least of your worries. Make sure the monitor is off and the electric bill will be negligible. I'd be more worried about his lack of help. You both need to tell him that he's not pulling his weight. If he hears it from both roommates, maybe he'll catch on. If he's stubborn, you're right, violence is not the answer. BUT, if the lease is in his name, stick him with it and leave. Make sure to tell any potential roommates what a pig he is :) If it's your lease, evict him.

But most of all, don't keep it to yourself because you'll just get more and more pissed off. I hate people who bottle up feelings and then suddenly explode out of the blue as if you were supposed to somehow know.

We have sat down with him and talked with him about all the things that have been on our minds. Every time i tried to get a point acrossed it was like he wasnt listning just waiting to get his point in.

He likes to have his computer on because its like a pager for him (except he is never there to check it, and he leaves his message services on "away message"). As far as we know, he never mentioned downloading anything... hes more of a gamer than a music or video guy.

We put the lease in all of our names, which means were stuck with him untill its up....thats when we kick him out and get a better(hopefully) one.Tyler

Haha, what a moron. Pagers are cheap. If he really wants people to be able to get ahold of him he should just get a pager. Either that or one of the cheap cell phone plans. Sounds like you got a real winner on your hands.

I'm lucky enough to get along with my current roommate. Neither one of us is anal about cleanliness so we just straighten up now and then. One of my previous roommates was apparently some sort of undeclared water conservationist because he rarely showered. Now THAT bothered me.

Good luck dude.

Whoa, that's steep. Maybe rates are different in NE, but I can't imagine they'd be that much worse than Cali. What you got goin on there, a disco? If they'll tell you, see what your neighbor's bills look like. The only thing I can think of is AC. Are you using your AC alot? We never use our AC so our bill is always similar. That's the one appliance that can throw your bill way out of skew. I guarantee it's not your roommate's computer. Even if he was running a VAX it wouldn't throw your bill up THAT much.

My last residence... 5 guys:

Large in-ground pool running daily2 refridgerators3 large stereostv's in every bedroom and 2 living roomsalways had people over 24/7 so lights and power usage was constant... our bill was always around $150. Not too bad split 5 ways!
