LOL ! South Florida, for all it's amazingly brilliant features also has a high number of drunks, un-insured, and basically horrible drivers. Lots of car insurance companies here (and maybe elsewhere) base your rates not just on previous history, but now place heavy consideration on your credit rating, employment, and even your actual postal code and how many claims arise in your postal code.
In Florida, over 30% of accidents are alcohol related. It is estimated nearly 76,000 arrests for DUI in 2014 and over 1,400 deaths 2013 in Florida where at least one driver was DUI.
My county has spring breakers, tons of clubs, and I live just off the ocean where most of the tourists visit.
My 07 M was totaled whilst I was making a turn from AIA along the ocean onto my street. The DUI driver was a 22 year old girl. Unknown to me, about a half mile behind me, a policeman was following her north bound on AIA, clocked her over 60 mph in a 25 mph zone with one lane north and one lane south. According to his report, which was read at the trial, he thought is a bad idea to stop her immediately because it could cause slow traffic along the beach. He continued to follow her without lights while waiting a few more blocks where AIA has two lanes each direction before pulling her over. Unfortunately, I live about 3 blocks before the road changes and she came up behind me as I nearly stopped to make my turn. She struck my car just behind the rear wheel on the driver side, and the policeman wrote that he saw the rear of my car raise up off the road, spin around twice, and land long-ways in the south bound lane. Her car disintegrated into large pieces on impact, and blocked the north bound lane. Add to that, the police cars, ambulances, and a fire truck and AIA was completely closed in both directions for hours that night. She was unhurt and taken to the jail. I was injured and went through 6 months of therapy to gain back as much as I could for my neck and shoulder injuries.
Interestingly, although the impact caused my car to stall, I instinctively tried to re-start it to try to move it off to the side and it started right up ! But the rear end was bent, the rear suspension was ripped out of place, and the exhaust was in the street so it wouldn't move. Through all that, I remember that my music was still playing, the air/con was still going, and the engine after restarting, ran smooth and quiet as ever - now THAT is a true testament to a high quality built vehicle!
