I was browsing a 350Z forum, and ran across this alarming test information on using Mobil 1 synthetic oil. Click on the link above to view. I am running out tomorrow to by new engine oil!

ALOT of people here use Mobile 1. There is still alot of debate over whether the information about it not being a true synth is actually true.

I use Mobil 1 on my daily driven G. If ur planning on taking ur car to a race or track often (like the Z mentioned), I too would recommend the best synthetic u can afford. I drive my car pretty agressively on the streets (when it's safe of course) and Mobil 1 does a good enough job. They don't sell the best (race formulas) to the public because we wouldn't be willing to shell out the dough. Our oil is made for different driving characteristics (Not racing). They keep the name because that's what we see on T.V. and it sells. I too will probably switch to Castrol Syntec, because Mobil 1 jacked up the prices for their so called 15k oil. Don't get me wrong this oil will probably work for people who drive their cars conservatively, but like I said before I like to drive fast. I don't want to shell out the xtra dough and i'm not going to wait 15,000 miles to change my oil.

I'm kind of glad somebody brought this up.

I started using the M1 synthetic in my I30 and the oil got dirtier faster. Like nearing black at 2k miles. I found their clean 5k and clean 7500 to work best, but I think Amsoil will be the next step.

I don't like paying $6/quart for half assed synthetic that has to be changed every 3500 miles.

M1 is a miracle oil. Yes, it gets dirty pretty quickly, but in the end, you feel like your engine is working properly, and you feel the engine is alive. I flog my car regularly and Mobil1 Has never dissapointed. I change my oil every 3,000 miles simply because I flog the car routinely, and that with a short ram cold air intake, your car will certainly attract more dirt and dust into the filter and oil, than with the OEM intake system.

Amsoil, Redline and Royal Purple are the only *true* synthetic oils made, aside of the German Castrol Syntec, but that is really hard to find.

Thay are a little bit more expensive, but well worth the money IMHO.

Beaner, what is your def. of true syn oils?I've talked with the M1 guys and they tell me it's 100% made in the lab with no dino additives. I don't pretend to be a chemist , so I have to rely on other's research. I called M1 after seeing some negative comments on the boards about M1.I'm not being a smarta$$ here either, actually showing my ignorance!

I've used M1 ever 3.5K in the last 3 cars I've owned for the last 8 years. Hasn't failed me yet.

My understanding was that M1 wasn't made from 100% synthetic chemicals. My understanding was that it is based from dyno oil.

Damnit Rich, now I will have to do some investigation and find the articles that I read about it...

However it's sunny and Saturday, which is rare, so I will be out of the house in a few minutes...

As far as I'm concerned, Mobile 1 isn't a true synthetic. It is derived from PAOs or some other acronym that's close, which I believe comes from the purest part of crude oil.

Many synthetics are actually crude oil that's been broken down molecularly and "washed" to the point where they consider it synthetic, because they put it back together again and engineer the refined base stock.

So it's kind of like saying that concrete is synthetic as long as you pulverize the stone small enough. In the end, there is still rock in there.

Rich,

I think I'm going to switch over to amsoil after the dealership replaces my engine (I'm pretty sure they will).

I'm at my first 1k oil reading and the dip stick is half way between the L & H which I estimate is 2 quarts.

Thats what i buy!!!! I'm glad someone else knows about it..... I've bought it at Wal*Mart the last 3 - 4 oil changes. Haven't had a problem with Mobil-1, not even Mobil-1 from walmart. Really is like $20-$22 for a 5 qt. jug, and the auto stores only have 4 qt. jugs of Mobil-1 for like $25

Mobil 1 is different at Wal Mart than other places? No wonder why I hate that store.

I don't think so, but I was looking at a smoker grill there that was much cheaper than the one at Lowes, then noticed the quality on the Walmart one WAS much cheaper....

Also, I've always used Anco wipers and got a set for my G at Wally World. The Driver's side was jumping and skipping on the windshield while driving to work...in the dark...at 6AM....BEFORE any coffee!!!

Anyway, replaced it with some expensive all plastic Bosch which worked great in the downpour over the weekend.

haha I was just kidding, but I actually don't like the store. I'll only go there if I have to, which isn't too often thankfully.

i couldn't think of one reason to hate walmart, except when you go in for 1 thing you end up with a cart full of sh*t you don't need. Guess thats why they give you a cart when you walk in, because they know you'll need it.

I have used M1 5w-30 in my Altima without any problems but after reading numerous threads on a Altima board I,m using Amsoil TSO 0w-30 in the G. Very good numbers on the ball bearing and metal detection tests. Also using the eao amsoil filters that are extended run as well.

Just out of curiousity, how much is that putting you back each oil change?

I know the drain interval is extended and the protection is phenomenal. I just want to be prepared for how much I'll need to pony up.

the oil is around $42 per gallon and the filter 8 to 9 bucks delivered. I don't know how many miles I'm going to try and run the amsoil but it won't be more than 7,500 and probably less than that. Just changed it a few weeks ago. Their is a sales guy off the old board that I use.
