I just did a 5 speed swap and I'm trying to hook up the speed sensor. I have a 95 and I put in a s13 transmission btw. I hooked up the green wire to pin #27 (speedometer) on the auto control unit harness and I took the black wire and ran that to ground.

So then I attempted to turn the car on and everything went dead (all teh dash lights). Then I tried again and everything was off. So then I disconnected the neg. battery cable and then put it back on and when I turn the key in the ignition to Accy. the lights turn on but I'm afraid of something happening if I try to crank it again.

So did I wire it right or no? and if not, how am I supposed to do this?

Try looking at the s13 DOHC FSM? It should show you where and how everything hooks up on the transmission. Look under the manual transmission section and electronics. It's bound to be there.

I just went through this ordeal last night. You have an S14, so therefore you need an S14 speed sensor. The speed sensor is basically a generator, do neither of the wires go to ground. You probably shorted something out. I'm not exactly sure which pins you need to connect it to, but the proper wires should be bundled with the set that goes to the second oxygen sensor. Using an S13 speed sensor will make your speed read double (aka fuel cutoff at ~60mph). The connectors for the S13 and S14 speed sensors are different too. I machined my S13 connector to fit [previous owner decided to clip off S14 harness and attach an S13 end to it, long story], and it works fine now.
