Anyone know where I can find instructions on how to install a new stereo and speakers in a 2006 Xterra? I googled it and the only good thing I found was this forum.

I do not have the RF system.

I couldn't tell you exactly on your vehicle, but based on photos, you may be able to simply remove the bezel trim around the radio. It is rather thin though, so it's also possible that you may need to remove the 2 vent panels on either side. My guess is those are held on with clips. I wouldn't be surprised if the stereo is actually screwed into the bezel from behind. You might try removing the tray above the stereo as well. It could at least let you see what is holding it all together. Avoid using screwdrivers to pry panels off. They can mar surfaces. A credit card like object can help you get under the edges of panels sometimes so you can grasp the edge with your fingers if you need.

For the speakers, I can't find any clear photos of them. Front speakers are probably in the door. If the speaker grill is removable, then remove it. don't force anything though, some cars look like they have removable grills but may be permanent or semi-permanent. If the grill can't be removed, you'll probably need to remove the interior door panel. Typically, there will be a few screws (usually one in the handle and a couple on the edges). The rest will typically be clips. The upper portion is likely going to he held on to the lower part of the window frame. It will kind of be hanging on it, so once you pop all the clips you should be able to lift the door panel up off the door. Make sure to unplug any harnesses back there before you do this though.

I have no idea where the rear speakers are, but if they are in the rear door, expect it to be somewhat similar to the front doors. If it's behind a stationary panel, you'll have to remove the panel. These can use screws or clips, or some combination of them. Best thing to do is to inspect the panel carefully to figure it out.

For the actual stereo install, if you have a single-din stereo, you'll need a mounting kit or perhaps a plate or pocket that can be mounted below the stereo as the xterra has a double-din opening. I don't know if all Xterra's actually use a double-din stereo. If you haven't picked up a Metra harness (or something similar), then pick one up that's made for your car. You simply use wire connectors or solder with shrinkwrap to connect the stereo harness to the metra harness, then plug one end intot he car's harness and the other to the back of the stereo. Cutting and splicing the existing harness can make a mess, make it difficult to the put the stock stereo back in (if you ever need to) and if the unfortunate happens and someone steals the a stereo, they may simply unplug it or cut it at a point that leaves the factory harness intact (hopefullly).

I haven''t seen any speaker harnesses readily available, but a couple of matching pins and some wiring and you can make your own. Other options are to splice into the wires leaving the plug intact, or if you don't care, cut off the plug and add the connectors to the end of the factory wiring to plug into your speakers.

If any of this intimidates you, you might consider taking it to a good stereo shop.
