hooking in a radar detector

Has anyone tried to hook up there radar detector to your cigarette lighter via tapping into the wire. My friend did it with his radar detector and he still has his phone recharger hooked up and it worked fine. He told me all he did was cut the cigarette lighter wires and wired the radar detector to it and hooked everything back up. Did anyone ever try that?

all you need is a ground and i guess a 12V connection, of course it'll work, but you lost any chance of returning the detector.

yeah i did that works greatlets you hide the wire a lil better too since ur running it under the whole plastic console thingy

Mine is tapped right off the ignition switch wire.

Just pull the plastic shroud off the steering console, and use a test light to find out which wire is your 12 V switch wire (lights up when you turn ignition to "on" and turns off when u turn ignition off). Then just splice into that wire.

many radar dectors say right in the manual how to hardwire it. Liek everyone has said all you need is a 12v wire, and a ground. My k40 came witht he coiled wire, and a wire for hardwireing. Another suggestion would be to put a fuse in the wire, othere wise you might fire it. Good luck.
