I'm THINKING about installing a hood scoop on my V, and was wondering about rerouting the air intake to it, for an actual ram air. I am unsure about the benefits of this in comparison to the CAI. Is the price difference and the labor worth the increased performance (i.e.: will I spend $500-$600 for the same gain as a $250 CAI?)? I think that the V would look sharp with one similar to the Lancer's (recessed into the hood, as opposed to those cheap lund ones)

The scoop you're referring to is called an NACA scoop. NACA was the precursor to NASA, and they did a lot of aerodynamics research. The scoop is very effective when the air flow is very smooth over the leading surface. It's also very easy to create. You cut mirrored curves, cut across the back edge, bend the inner surface down, and weld in sides. I remember one body-kit company making fiberglass inserts where you simply cut the hole and dropped it in but I don't remember who it was. You could also glass your own. The cool thing is, you don't have to center it. You can offset it over the filter itself. That shows you're doing it for a purpose and not for looks.

If you do put on a scoop, think about what will happen when it rains. You may want a box/tray underneath that redirects the water away from the filter, electronics, etc.

I hope you do add one. It's great when people do their own mods.

The vents may help with cooling which is beneficial. You can look into ducting from one of the fog light spots since you can easily cut out the holes the lights would fit into.

You know, ducting from one of the fog lights was something I had not considered. I was planning on putting in fog lights, though.

I've done this with my truck. You can do this very cheaply or make it as expensive as you want The V runs pretty cool already.

speaking of temperatures (and a little off topic), one of the things that irks me is the actual lack of a temperature gauge. I know the red and blue temp lights are supposed to "compensate" for that, and many people are big fans of a clean looking instrument cluster (and the Versa's is nothing if not clean). I still, however would like more gauges.

I think I am going to install a set of autometers across the top when I move out to California (most likely engine/oil temp, voltage, and a water temp gauge) I was thinking about a 3 gauge bracket in black across the top of the gauge cluster.

Continuing the hi-jack: If you can stand to lose the pocket above the radio, that would be a great place for gauges. Three 45mm gauges fit within a standard DIN opening. The 52mm can be made to fit as well.

As the voltage and outside temperature can be handled by a pair of Radio Shack digital readouts (and discretely placed within the dash), I'd put oil pressure, oil temperature and water temperature. If I were going to be doing any ECU tuning or some power-adder (turbo/nitrous), I'd use an exhaust gas temperature (EGT) in place of water temp.

Hmmmm... I think I smell a DIY comin'. And perhaps a kit to follow.

Definitely going to do the NACA scoops on my own (might buy them as inserts, though), and I think STILL go with a small hood scoop, and some pins. I need to lower the V and get new rubber for my rims. Lots to do, and so little money to do it with.
If you want a "positive displacement" scoop, you could go with the little 300ZX Turbo scoop from an 85. There's an example here. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2503040

That keeps it in the family.

What about the special Crumple rippled hood? Will cutting it modify anything?

I didn't know there WAS a special crumple ripple thing in the hood. Not that it really matters, but how does that make the car any safer?

I dont think there is any safety i the hood, in most accidents the hood crumples and folds up so it doesn't crash into your face.

on most cars there are ripples that when in the unfortunate chance you do get in a front end collision the hood will collapse in on its self and not just beak off at the hinges.

All right....so I ordered the scoop

http://buddyclub2.com/accessor...x.htm

and had it shipped to my mom's place in Cali (where we will be moving temporarily while we find a place on the left coast). I have a decent set of instructions on how to INSTALL it, now I have to figure out how to reroute the air intake to make it a functional ram air hood. the questions arise about water hitting the air filter and how to avoid it.

I photoshopped the NACA scoop on the V, and I just didn't like it.

It should be a few months, but hopefully I will have my first DIY posted.

Incidentally, I found the din gauge cluster in a WRX. With all the gauges neeed. I will be calling Scooby-roo to see if it is stock in the STI, and see if I can order a "replacement".

Good luck with the installation dude, honestly i wouldn't have enough courage in myself to go cutting chunks in my new car's hood. As for water getting into the scoop i don't know of any solutions I mean a water bypass valve wouldn't do much because it's not like it is getting submerged in the water. Good luck!

Luck is exactly what is needed, because I have NEVER done any mods (other than painting) on my own. I have always paid to have them done by someone else. IF, however, I can successfully do this one, the rest should seem pretty simple. I just am not waiting for the CF hood to come out. If Siebon and Stillen are clueless, then I don't expect it before the GEN II Versa comes out (3-5 years from now?). And I am NOT that patient.

How do you plan on running the piping to the intake manifold? A drawing would be nice

It's not the question of water hitting the filter, its if the filter will suck any is it up, the AEM and Fujita CAI both can get wet but they cant get submerged. I dont think you will have a problem with sucking too much water in, but then again ive been wrong in the past.
