I'm looking at putting a hoodscoop on my 240 but I've run into some problems. There are NONE that I can find in sheetmetal and I hate fiberglass, and 2 I can't seem to be able to decide on dimensions.

I love the RX-7 Turbo 2s and I think they are a similar body style to the 240 and the hoods are almost identical in shape. On the RX-7 hoods the scoop is not centered, but maybe a few inches offcenter. ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...84849 )I don't really like that so my plan was to cut the scoop from an RX-7 hood and weld it onto the 240s hood, then cut the opening from underneath. Well, to my dismay the RX-7 hood is aluminum and you can't weld aluminum to steel with a spot welder.

I'm pretty good with sheetmetal so I'm sure I can make something that looks very similar from steel and weld it on, but I want to hear other opinions on this. I think the scoop would look good, but thats just me. I'm also curious as to what dimensions everyone thinks would be good. I know I don't want it too high, maybe 2-2.5"s but I'm not sure how long or wide would look best.

Let me hear em, opinions, thoughts, ideas, flames.

The entire engine bay and my oil cooler.

Any hood scoop is going to have a slight affect on underhood temps, even if its just because heat can escape through them or cooler outside air is being forced through the engine bay.

i would think that the wrx hoop scoop would just look wierd, the wrx has a much more boxy look that the 240. I think that scoop needs to be longer and more smooth than the wrx box.

i think a scoop would be pointless, thats what the giant opening in the 240sx's front bumper is for. If you actually want to modify your hood so that it cools without adding air drag and bad looks, vent it right imbetween the radiator and engine so that hot air is draw strait from the radiator out of the car.

Unless you need it for clearance for something you've done to your motor, I would advise against it. Besides looking cheap and tacky, it really serves no other purpose other than to identify you as a teenaged boy. Does the same thing as an oversized wing, whcih is cosmetic only. If you have an overheating problem in your stock car, then you have a mechanical problem. And adding an aftermarket hood vent is not going to fix it.

240's dont need additional cooling the huge vent up front does enough. When I wrecked my old 240 i broke the radiator cap off an drove with out a front bumper an never had an overheating problem.

Well, first of all, I'm not running stock, I'm running an SR. Second, I'm doing an oilcooler but I don't really have room for it up front with my intercooler, AC condensor, and radiator being there already and I don't want to put it flat under the car and risk something on the road ripping it up, so I'm going to mount it above the valve cover, directly under the hood scoop. This will minimize the amount of oil line I have to run, give a direct blast of cooler air into the cooler, and since fluids run down hill, it will make it easier to drain all of the oil out of the system when doing an oil change.

I've seen a WRX with an FMIC. They put the oil cooler right under the hoodscoop and it looks funky, but it works. ANyway, you might want to consider using a small vent off to the side like the older 300Z rather than an entire hood scoop.

Its not like i'm going to weld it there, I'm going to have mounting brackets. I mean, I don't go out and change my plugs every weekend so I wouldn't exactly call it a major PITA just becasue I'd have to move the cooler out of the way.

Didn't know you weren't stock. Sorry. That makes more sense. I'm sure there are other NICO guys that have added an oil cooler when they did an SR swap. Have they shared where they located theirs?
