I just finished Installing a Sachs Stabilus hood lift on my '94 Q and in the process noticed that the hood was bent. This new lift was vastly more tightly sprung than the orignial, which could just barely hold the hood up. I was able to pretty well bend the hood back into shape with my body weight, but it was a close call --reinstalled the old lift and called it a day. Moral of the story: beware of simple jobs on the Q; and don't use a Sachs Stabilus lift. Compressing even the old semi-worn out shock required almost my full body weight. Is there some sort of jig for maintaining the compression during installation? Anyone find a satisfactory brand lift? Ideas?

Their was a fairly exhaustive thread on here just a month or so ago regarding this very topic. Not sure if it was the same brand of oleo, but the results were the same...well, worse actually. The dude d!ck up his hood pretty good.

Give the search a fling and see if you can locate it. Not too much definitive info other than "Get parts from Joe" but plenty of good anecdotal info. There are a few mans of replacement struts who are offering a suitable replacement but I can't give you their name...sorry. My short term memory goes all to hell when I start tippin' the Beefeater.

At any rate, I am glad that you didn't d!ck up your hood. My hood is really d!ck up, what with the crack hos' on the corners and drive-bys and what not.
