hood, fuel release lever handles

Car: Nissan versa hatchback

I have a versa 2007 hatchback. The lever handle is broken. This is located under the dash. Tried putting the hood cable on to the release lever, just couldn't. Any ideas or tips?

Don't be surprised if you have to remove the attachment at the end of fuel door cable that opens the door to get enough slack to put another handle on due to cable tautness.
