So after a real inspection of my rb20, the scratch in cyl 1 doesn't seem to be much of a problem
http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k54/N ... 001127.jpg

I pulled out that piston/rod, and there is nothing there to cause that mark. Just maybe some dirt, but that could have been from the build up at the top of the bore. The scratch does line up with where the top ring gap is.

And since I want to do my rb25 right and not have any more problems with it for a year or two, I want to throw together the rb20.

The idea was to either put it together exactly as it was, or do a quick hone on the bores and turn the rings a little.

What do you guy suggest, I just need this engine to last about two months. I do want to drive it to the carlile,pa meet and i will be going to drift event/practices and its my daily. I can deal with some oil consumption my main worry is still keeping the compression numbers up and not tanking the bottom end just yet. Or maybe just honing #1? I donno, I want to put zero to no money in the rb20 and still do whats best with what I have, heh.

I'll get some good pics on sunday, but its seems in over all good shape.

you want to reuse a ring that scratched your bore?

and no, if you hone you CAN NOT reuse them. you WILL have massive amounts of blowby.

i dont understand why you only want it to run for 2 months.... new oem rings are liek 60 dollers i think at the most they will cost 100 dollers....

if your going to be abusing (yes spirited driving aka drifting is abusing) just take time to do it right... what if you drive to carlisle and f*** motor up on way there and gotta tow it home... thats obviously more money than the rings

if you want it running that bad buy a KA

...Wrong you can reuse your rings and have great compression.... He said hone not bore... You can get a dingle berry hone aka poor mans hone and take that scuff out without taking hardly anything from your bore ID. That scuff looks like carbon build up more than a scratch. It is where oil that dont get scraped off by your rings is burnt staining your cyl walls. On a piston ring the force is uneven at the gap hence the scuff. I busted a ring land on an sr20det I was in a bind I took a used piston/rings honed the walls and threw it together with old cometic hg. It ran like it never happened... and compression was equal on all 4. So no I wouldnt do it but in your situation.... Yes do what you got to do....

This only has to last until my RB25 is rebuilt and I drop it in.

Find me rings that are in stock some where (and ~$60) and wont take more then two weeks to get here, and I'll buy them. Ive found nothing. I have found a set of rb20 rings from erics performance parts for $225-250 but they say not in stock but will ship in 7-10 days. Yeah my luck with that means 3 months.

Thank you beanstalk, that's the kind of helpful info I need. That mark can't be felt by hand, its all visual.

I'm going to go see what I can make work. I'd really like to put my engine together today.

Any reason why you cant just reuse the rings/piston without touching the bore? That may be your best bet.

I agree with ST240, if you just need it to run for a little bit, don't even bother with rehoning it. Just pop that piston back in and try and line the rings back up to where they were. You'll be fine...
