So whats the deal with honing the piston walls? is it the same as Boring them? the engine I'm buying needs 3rd piston ring replaced and the wall honed. Also can I do 1 wall or do i need to hone / bore them all? Thanks

You will have to take some measurements with a micrometer. Honing puts angled scratches in the cylinder wall to control oil flow. Yes it needs to be done. Odds are if it needs a new ring then the wall is gonna have some damage and you will either have to increase the ring size on all the pistons or change your compression ratio to compensate for the worn cylinder wall. But take measurements first at the top, middle, and bottom of the cylinder wall. This is a good way to show defects invisible to the human eye. Personally if your gonna have it apart this far I would just throw in some nice pistons and rods.

Honing is super easy, and if your going to do one, you should just do all 4. literally probably 30-40 seconds a cylinder.

All depends on how far you leave for final clearance lol. The last engine I did I spent about an hour on each cylinder. Left .004" for honing.

honing is for removing a small amount of material from the cylinders...ie; clean hone to bring them back to true round or 5 to 10 thousands, when over sizing 20-30 or more over you bore it first and then hone to desired finish and yes once the block is setup you should do all cyl while its there.

i honed for a living for a year, and telling girls i expand holes with my mandrel for a living was worth it.
