Car: Not a 240 =) Thinking of getting one again...

Post

Hi all. I havent been really posting here lately but heres the deal.

I had a 240sx up until last August and I got in to an accident due to a yellow cab stopping short on me and I basically junked the car. Ever since then, I have been looking at another car to get from 240sx to maxima, g35, 350z, 300zx, rx7 turboII. I was going to purchase the rx7, 240 and the 300zx with cash and the other 2 cars, I was going to finance it so I have been saving money. But, I really had no use for a car really due to always being in work and in NYC, it is really easy to get to work due to the WONDERFUL subway system (yah right...) Now just recently, a friend I know who had a s2000 started telling me all these great things about it and the s2k has been in my head ever since. Anyone have any inputs about them? If I was to get it, I'm still trying to decide wether to get the 2003 models with 2.0 and 9000rpm redline or the new models with 2.2 and 8000 rpm. Give me some inputs guys.

Great car and a future classic but to quote James from Top gear: Too many gears: 6, too many revs, 9 and not enough liters, 2.

Its not a very civilized car, you wont have too much fun with it driving it around the city unless you're able to hit 6300 rpm somewhere along the way.

But if you're able to get it on an twisty road every now and then, it would be worth it.

i'd buy one in a heartbeat.

it's a very nice looking grocery getter when your cruising around town, but once you get out onto the open road....that's when the fun begins.

Impractical (no space whatsoever), but fun as all hell.

Not sure I'd want to own something nice in Queens, especially with parking issues, vandalism, expenses...

OH about the parking. I'm going to be leaving it in a garage so I dont have to worry about it.

Why would you even consider the old one if given a choice? So you could rev a whole thousand RPMs higher? WHY? No matter how high it rev's it'll still be torqueless and slower than the newer one. I'll never understand the obsession with revving unnecessarily high if you can make more power before then.

Faster or a higher redline? Of course the high school Honda ricers think that lowering the redline is the worst travesty ever, but that's why they're morons. If you have to get an S2000, get the new one.

......

I mean yeah I know that the newer ones are faster and also that it has better torque curve. But for some reason, isnt the 9000rpm unique? Also, I went to s2ki.com and someone mentioned that the vtec kicks in around 6500 rpm and u have more use for it since it acn go all the way up to 9000...... I dont know how true this is... just quoting a guy from there.

my friend has one that revs to 9 and I drive it all the time. It is a fast, fast car that can beat alot of the cars around stock. I am a 6'4 230lb man and I can fit in it, it is tight. I would suggest getting it. Check out s2ki.com and look around.

A big lack of torque is all I've ever heard about them, old or new ones. I've heard the new ones are better on torque, but still not much of a difference. This combined with you can create a much better car for the same amount of money -- 350Z with mods or an insane 240.

sorry yeah it was 8300 and the older one really cuts off at 8900... so theres only 600 rpm difference.

I have always known them as a slow car for the money but i really dont know alot about them. Im more of a Nissan person my self, and i would be much happier in a 350z or 240. Just my oppinion tho.

S2000s are great cars with good track potential, they are also nice summer/cruise vehicles. If you want something that can rev to 9K (and higher) get a bike :] If you're looking for a good daily driver, I'd say 350Z or G35.

GET AN R32! or a 240 with an skyline engine!if you gat the kind of money to buy a new S2K, you could invest that in having a VERY pimp Nissan. THINK...about it

The nice thing about a higher redline is that you can stay in a lower, more powerful gear for a longer period. However, with only a 600RPM difference, I could give up that small amount for some extra torque.

My love is for Autox so the S2000 is just the sort of car I would like. However when it comes down to it if I had that sort of money to blow (and if I do, I know I have it made), I would rather build myself a Catheram Super Seven.

THX for the input guys.

I know that with the money i'm going to be spending, I can buy a 240 and mod it to run faster but, I kind of want to own a new car now... I love 240s but I have never owned a brand new car and I think I should start... might not be a very good idea but also, this would be a great way for me to build my credit higher as long as I dont mess this up.

Also, I know a guy who is sponsered by AEM and he gets nearly free parts and even OEM honda parts... and he is going to be hooking me up.

S2000s are one of the crowning achievements of mankind, if I could afford the insurance on one, I'd have one.

The engine is an absolute dream, and you NEED and WANT those 6 gears to keep it on boil all the time because of the high redline.

The transmission is quite simply the best manual transmission I've ever driven, better than the E46 M3 6MT IMO. It makes the whole package worth it alone.

Screw practicality, screw behavior in traffic, S2000s rule. I will have one someday;) Between older and newer I'd say newer because of the torque curve and interior differences, but you can get used ones for about $20k, and that's a big dif from $32k for a brand new one.

The S2000 is certainly going to be a classic, but the same can't be said for the SRT-4.

Not that its a horrible car, its just marketed towards a different age group, and people will look at you a certain way when you drive a SRT-4 as opposed to an S2000

Eh, SRT-4 is like $20k, brand new WRX is like $21-22k (mine was $21,700 when I got it). Why buy the FWD SRT-4 when you can have the AWD WRX with loads of japanese aftermarket support.

I have watched SRT-4's run at AutoCross. They have loads of body roll in turns. But somehow they manage to turn in great times.

This thread just became very relevant to me, because my dad might be buying a S2000 soon. He saw some car for way under blue book value, so he's going to get the car checked out and if it's in good condition he's going to buy it, and sell it off later and probably going to get his money back, granted I don't blow it up ;] So, 2000 has 5 speed and 8900 redline, 2001 has 6 speed and 8900 redline. Which ones are the 2.2L with 8300 redline?
