I just got an offer from Honda for a co-op position from January-August. The only thing I'm questioning though is the pay sucks ($13.50/hr) but you work ~45 hrs/week, so you get overtime. I'd get a furnished apartment(minus pots, pans, linens, tv) for $300/month including utilities. I'd be working on new product development with the '06 Civic....meeting with vendors, going on business trips to meet the vendors(get to take whatever car from the fleet), designing some parts for production....and so many hotties there.

I'm debating if I just want to accept this or go to my interview with Lubrizol tomorrow(~3hour interview), then decide.

It sounds like a pretty good offer to me. And I dont think the pay sucks better than working at mcdonalds lol I'd go for it if I were you or wait to see how your interview goes tomorrow, see what they have to offer you, then decide. Either way, Good luck

Go for it.

They'll be evaluating you for full-time the entire time, methinks, that's generally what co-op positions are for.

If their co-op is that sweet a deal, the full time jobs have to be fantastic. Ride it out, and even if they don't give you a full time job, that's a good resume booster to get in at another car company.

EDIT: Oh, and accept it AND go to your Lubrizol interview. Even if you sign a letter of hire, you can still leave the next day to go elsewhere, this is the job market, no problem with being a shadeball. Although your field is a smaller pond than mine is, you might want to avoid the bridges burned by such tactics.

I'd say go to the interview then decide. It's always good to have more options and I don't see how waiting one day would make a huge difference. Though when you say, whatever car from the fleet, you think they'd let you take out an NSX? Not badged under honda in america but same thing. Not really entirely sure what lubrizol does so I couldn't tell you much about that, but I'd personaly take the job with honda since I love their engines so much.

No question man. Have as many doors open as possible. Just knowing you have something lined up should make tomorrow's interview a breeze.

Man, that pay should go up every 3 months or semester. I think that's just starting out pay. I'm actually working on some stuff on the '06 Civic Type-R at the Denso where I co-op. Maybe I'll meet you if you take the job. As for the apartment expenses that's very low. Compared to other companies I've interviewed last year, all of them were giving above $400 for monthly living expenses. Good luck in you co-op hunting.

You gotta start somewhere. I worked for Honda Canada in '99 in their business intelligence/marketing division. Although I worked on contract they treated me like one of there own, even extending to me some of their regular employee perks. The best part of working at Honda is that everyone has the same cubicle, no one including senior executives get no offices and everyone is treated on a equal footing very nicely. Their also seemed to be an absence of ego's.

Man, I applied to a bunch of Co-ops last summer, and noone returned. Good sign for my graduation I guess.

The one I finally found was with the USAF, and with luck this Spring I will commission as an officer.

BTW, I am studying to be an Electrical Engineer.

Is this your first internship/co-op?

I only got a little more for my first internship, ($15/hr), and it was at a small company that couldn't guarantee me 40hrs a week. Just whenever they had work I could do, and at the point I was in my training, that wasn't much. I could design the simplest digital circuits, read schematics, operate lab equipment, and solder like crazy. Even though I have added a ton of new skills in 16 months, soldering is still something I can do really well.

I made $10/hr at my first internship. That was the summer of 98, so I guess $13.50/hr nowadays is about the same.

I would be all over that Honda job, especially with the cheap housing and great benefits.

According to your lack of dicussion regarding your new interview, it does seem as if you already have your mind made up...

Just go for the Honda job. It sounds great, and I know if I was you... Id be all over it.

I agree - Brett, nail it down.

A company like Honda will have TONS of room for advancement, and in today's economy, $13.50 with benefits is nothing to sneeze at, esp if it's your first career gig.

Go get 'er done.
