SLBM's.

(Sea-launched ballistic Missles) prototyped in 50's enterd service in early 60's (does this count?)

Hmm when was the transistor invented? might be worth a look-up.

Fallout Shelters are a concept that began in the 50's in earnest, but I dont know if that would be purely 50's since I wouldnt be surprised if the first were built in the late 40's..

Anway food for thought, if I can think of more I will post it.

The elucidation of DNA as a double helix by Watson and Crick is a schild of the 50's ( too lazy to look up the year).

May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court issued a historic decision in the case of Brown v. Board of Education. It "declared separate educational facilities for minorities were inherently unequal.

This means that you've no excuse for not completing this project yourself. Connors tells me you're brilliant, but lazy. Intelligence isn't a priviledge, it's a gift.

Oh, gotcha, you're talking about the Geneva Agreements that divided N/S Vietnam -- sorry, you're right '54 or '56.

BIG wings on cars. Fairlane, '59 Coupe DeVille, '57 Bell Air, Impala.

If I remember right, Ford switched over to an OHV V8 in the 50's, from the Valve-in-block flathead.

Mustang was 64, IIRC, but the T-Bird came out in the 50's (where's 1der??).

I'd look for things that effected the day to day life - household goods, appliances, freedoms, education, peace/war, etc.

Well, they aren't something I've thought about in a long time, that's why my mind immediately went to the '49 Conventions. The formal title is : "AGREEMENT ON THE CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES IN VIET-NAM, JULY 20, 1954"...though I'm sure I've heard them called the Geneva Accords, but the Geneva Accord is also the plan for Middle East peace as represented by President Bush's "Roadmap". And to further complicate things, there's The Geneva Protocols of 1925 and 1977.

Semiconductors. Birth of transistors (late fifties, as I recall). Needed for the modern era of computing.

Fast Food (McDonalds). Albeit not in a good way, IMHO!

First satellite launched for transatlantic communication (I think in the fifties - made undersea cable less interesting.)

Space flight programs initiated (Gagarin, et. al.)
