Home made intake question

I am attempting to make my own intake for a ka24e and I figured out that the black rubber coupler with the tube that goes to the valve cover can be used as a step coupler. So I was wondering if the breather tube has to be close to the throttle? I am planning on putting it infront of the engine on the straight part of the intake since I only have a 3in. mandrel bent piece and then connecting it to the MAF with 2.5 inch tubing. Also since the coupler has indents on the 3in. side do you think it would cause too much turbulence? any info will help. thanks
