hey all. well heres my predicament:

I orderd a performance chip off ebay (just cause it was cheap and I wanted to know if they work or not). so i wired it up to my mafs and nothing happened. then about a day later i start up my car and its idling horribly. i start to take off and its acting like the mafs isn't working, then i start to smell fryed wiring inside the car. i pull over and my mafs electrical input is melted and fryed to sh*t (F*CK!!!). so i go out the next day and get a new mafs from the wrecker and put it in. I go start the car, and its acting the exact same, like the mafs isn't working. the one thing i did notice is when i connected the wires i could here the motor adjust just slightly, it sounded like the throttle opened just enough to let a whisper of air through, however it still ran very bad. as it lies, i CAN drive it, but its very rough and is running so rich i can almost watch my gas gauge drop.

now heres my theory, let me know if i'm on the right track or not. when i think back, the smell of the burnt wiring the day it first started was quite strong inside the car, could it be possible i toasted my computer?now if this is infact what i did, i was thinkin "hey, good time to swap in the computer from an automatic to get rid of my speed restrictor"

which brings me to my next question: If i do indeed end up needing a new computer, is the automatic and manual 240s' computers 100% interchangeable? will this be a plug and play job, or is there more to it then that?

I'm w/ erollinc. HAHA.

Have you tried cleaning the new maf from the junkyard? Those have been sitting a while. Drive w/ that new maf, and w/o it clipped in just to see if there is a difference.

I doubt your ecu is fried, since if that goes, the car wouldn't be drivable at all.

Have you check your spark plugs & wires? Since your car ran like crap for a while, the plugs may be all fouled up and wires maybe also slightly toasted. Those will also make your car run like crap.

** edit: o yea, also check ur o2 sensor - those things don't like to see too much rich exhaust.

if you smelled something burning in the car, you probably did smoke something in the ecu. i would remove the ecu from the right side kick panel and remove the cover and inspect the circuit board for any signs of damage. sometimes that kind of stuff can be repaired but if not, you'll have to get another one. as for swapping a manual trans ecu for an auto, not sure on that one, never tried it myself.

First thing I would do is check the ECU for codes, and check the ECU out. It could be the ECU because mine ran, and through a MAFS code for about a month till I swapped ECU's and it finally came out of safe mode. If the ECU and mafs are still good, make sure you didnt somehow create a break in your harness.
