alright, this is unbelievable.

you all know about the fact that I was gon take the 99 Q to the dealership for them to replace both mount struts which they said was gon cost including labor $1540.

now, what had happened was that I also wanted to have em paint up the front and back bumper which was severely scratched but when they mentioned an outrageous prize of $660, i was like NO way.

anyway, I took the car to the dealership today and told em not to wash the car because i had just got it painted. the dude was suprised. he said "for how much". i told him "$450". he was thrown off. then he asked me if I wanted to get the oil change done which according to the last time we spoke needed to be changed. I then told him I had already taken care of that too somewhere else. he was completely like "what"

anyway, to make a long story short. they took my car in to fix up the mount struts and about 3 to 4 hours later, he came up and told me he got GOOD NEWS for me. he said the technicians discovered that I really didnt need mount struts and that some other thing was causing the noises. he said they have fixed it and that its only gon cost me JUST under $500. hmmmmmmmmmm. from $1600 to $500???? hmmmm. something dont seem right.

even worse, i had taken the car to two different non-infiniti shops and they said I need new mount struts which i'd be better off getting at the dealership.

now, is this a miracle or some sick sh1t??

i took it to them about 2 weeks ago for them to certify what the rest of the shops has been saying. they looked at and said exactly what those shops said. they said i need mount struts which they will have to order.

now, how come when they checked it this time, all of a sudden, i dont need it no more?? this is really pathetic

well, is the problem gone???????

IMHO, i think you should start doing searches when any problems come up with your Q. just taking it to dealerships or independant shops and telling them to "fix the noise" is probably gonna drive you to the poor house!!!!! this site is such a great resource for all things Q,,,,don't be afraid to dive in!!!!!jeffps------i've recommended keith vanmeter in NJ to you in the past,,,,,you wont go through this again if you get on a personal basis with someone who knows the Q. to me it's worth the hour+ drive to know the work is done RIGHT!!!!!

I strongly agree with NuQ. You cant service the Q like you service any other car. If you want to stay within a reasonable budget, you have to search the forum and forge a relationship with a trustworthy technician.

if you paid 500 for the repair, look at the receipt and tell us what parts they replaced-maybe then we can make a better judgement on the repair.

Why not?

I mean, I agree that you need to know your mechanic, and your vehicle, if you don't want to get absolutely screwed...

Buy why wouldn't this apply to a 911S, or a M5 or even an Acura or Nissan or Ford or...?

I'll admit that the Q is relatively rare, so the odds of folks 'getting it wrong at your expense' is higher, but given an incompetant mechanic and you'll get screwed no matter what the car.

I'd say that all the REGULAR maintenance can be done by ANY good mechanic. The trouble shooting is a bit of a different fish.

And of course, even using 'the dealer' is zero assurance they will know their __- from a hole in the ground. Virtually none of them have worked on the old Qs.

PS The 'Will work for chain guides' pic cracked me up.

Youre right. A lot of regular maintenance, like brakes, fluid changes, etc, can be done anywhere. But the troubleshooting-related bizarre things often need to be done at a place that knows your car (that you trust).

For example, last year I needed a new fuel pump. That was easy enough. But then the car died again, so I had it towed back to my regular mechanic. After asking and searching on the forums, I found I needed a fuel control module. Got one at a junkyard for free, had a shop install it, and I've been good to go ever since.

The display, however, said "transmission error" (or something like that). A shop, possibly even the dealer, would have charged me hundreds for diagnosis.

The dealer I had available to me in Spokane WA was rather halfass (great parts counter, however). They were the only "Infiniti" dealer within 450 miles, and they sold more Suzukis than Q45s. I say "Infiniti" because they were a multibrand complex that did Ford, Nissan, Suzuki, and a bunch of other mass-produced brands.
