For those who don't recognize the name of one of the greatest film directors on earth, Guillermo del Toro is one of the greatest film directors on earth. The guy responsible for Pan's Labyrinth and both Hellboy movies. He's working with THQ on a Lovecraftian horror game.

"It’s horror…but it’s a very different type of horror game. It’s not survival horror. It’s truly a strange, geeky mix. It’s a Lovecraftian thing. Let’s leave it at that."

del Toro is a freaking genius. This has the potential to be far beyond epic. And THQ is one of the few big publishers I'd believe capable of taking chances on a big-budget game.

Non-game-related side-note: there's an upside to del Toro dropping his major role in The Hobbit: He's now working on a film adaptation of Lovecraft's Mountains of Madness. :naughty:

I hope he does an amazing job, but it's been my experience that film directors have issues making games due to not understanding the technicalities and having issues with deadlines (George Romero and RE2 anyone?). However, del Toro has a better vision for the abstract than a lot of directors, so I believe he'll do a good job. I also hope he decides to make some unique and amazing gameplay decisions. That's probably one of the biggest benefits to not having a gaming background: not being constrained by typical mechanics.

Anything "Lovecraftian" gets my approval, provided it's a quality piece. I can already see the packaging with a big Elder Sign on the cover. Cthulhu fhtagn!

This reminds me of a game I'd like to see revisited, and I'm sure MoD will agree given his love of Xenomorphs. "Dark Seed" - a game using H.R. Giger's artwork as source material. I played it way back in the day (on an Amiga no less!) - great idea, awful design & gameplay, it's time for a reboot!

And my love of Giger's work. I have Giger prints hanging around my apartment.

A link I picked up off of Kotaku this morning about del Toro's aspirations for his project. Pretty nifty read.
