I just called the local Nissan dealership to find out how much it would be to replace the timing chain in my 96 and fell on the floor, he told me $2300 in labor alone and another $450 for parts!?!?! Piss off!!!! I think I'll buy a new motor first. I was only going to replace the chain for preventitive maintnance but damn, nevermind now

i know a full timing chain kit should be around $350 from any parts store and labor it shouldnt take a nissan tech more than 3-4 hours to do one(guessing, i havent done it to mine yet) so maybe $200-300 for labor. but yeah, tell that dealer to pull his head out of his ***

12+ book hours. 2300's high, but about 1k would sound about right. Plus parts, about another 200-300 depending on how much stuff you replace. If you're gonna do it and it'll be your first time, it'll be a few days.

why do you want to replace your timing chain anyways? Unless you know that timing chain is broken you shouldnt have to reaplce it since its a non wear item.

Before you do anything I would start off by removing the guides and making sure the oil pressure is good to go and tensioners are not gunked up

Get the timing chain kit and do it yourself. I did it and the timing kit was aftermarket JDM supplier and I have 250.00 in it, but my oil pump was shot so i replaced it to. Just be sure to leave out the timing chain guides as ILikeMy240sx has pictured above. Dont get the 250.00 nissan pump get the 200.00 Toga high volume oil pump if you go that route.

I have all the tools and ability required to do the job, I used to be a mechanic ( industrial equipment ) so it shouldn't be an issue. I would rather have someone else do it but if I needed to I could do it myself. Is the KA an interference motor? My last engine ate itself due to a broken timing belt so I am tring to avoid that at all costs. Why leave out the timing chain guides?

I don't think I've ever heard of a timing cain breaking on a ka yet. Only the guides going out, or a tensioner. As far as the chain goes, according to nissan, I believe it's a nonservice item.

yes the KA is a interference engine!!! the timing chain on my old KA broke completely in half!! 2 pistons hit some valves bent them and put dents in the pistons. the gear on the end of the distributor broke half off and pieces of metal where all in my oil pan. i dont know how it broke but it did. i just bought a used engine then rebuilt it becuase its not worth fixing.

It is almost easier to by another KA and swap it in. $400 bucks or so.
