So, my Xbox 360 took a crap today. It's an original Elite. I'm getting the "Unplayable Disc" error that's the result of the disc drive falling apart. The drive started making really bad noises, then stopped making them and also stopped working.

I was JUST about to tear the thing apart, thinking that it had been more than a year since I'd bought it, when I decided I should check my receipts first. Dug through my receipt box, and I found the receipt for my Gamestop Product Replacement Plan for the 360. Dated 7-15-07. I have two weeks left on my replacement plan.

I'm glad I bought my system before Gamestop stopped offering PRPs on them!

$60 is certainly preferable to $450.

I replaced the box monday morning and the new one is cooler and significantly quieter (I wonder if my drive had been on it's way out for a long time, because my old 360 was a LOT louder than the new one). I can't say I lost out in this chain of events. One missed GTA match was worth the upgrade to a newer system!

Would yours make this strange "grunt" then get all quiet then make a few clicking noises and say "disc is dirty etc.... etc...? I have a spare Disc drive kicking around but I don't want to void my RROD warranty replacing it if its not the issue.

how old is your xbox360? if its under 3 years it might still be under warranty. I remember that sound with my old PS2 that i got at launch. i think it has something to the with the lens mechanism.

on newer sytems...my old xbox360 would be super hot after 30 mins...my new halo360 stays cool to the touch even after 8 hours of straight gameplay. so hopefully they corrected the problem...in addition to getting a new 360 i also upgraded my entertainment center to a more free flowing one...my old location put the 360 inside a cabinet

Yeah, it was still under the 1 year warranty. 3 year warranty is only for RROD unless you get the extended 2 years through MS, which I'll be doing for this Box.

It was an original-run Elite, so probably early spring '07 Manufacture date.

Thanks Mod but I think I may just buy a new one with a bigger HD once the price drop hit then fix this one as a spare/dedicated server.

Speaking of the new 60 gig 360...Any word on whether MS will be offering the 60GB HDD on it's own for existing Xbox owners to upgrade? I don't need one as I have the Elite's 120 gig, but I can think of a lot of people who would buy one.

I think the 120gb model was around 120$, i'd expect the 60gb to be about 70-80$

Plus, this fall when the dashboard update enables installing games to the hard drive for faster loading and quieter console operation, the 20gig will leave you short-changed.
