I took my G in today to get the tires rotated. The mechanic tells me that my right front tire is cupping badly. I guess that explains the roaring road noise that I've been experiencing. I'm very very dissapointed with the fact that these are very new tires, and cupping is already an issue. What do I do at this point? Get an alignment? Should I call up my dealership and see if they can fix it for free?

UPDATE: I called Infiniti consumer affair about this issue. They said there are no recalls about this issue. That is a bunch of BS considering that when I go to the search bar and type in: "G35 feathering/cupping tires", a buttload of topics and complaints about this problem has been mentioned. They did tell me however that if my local dealership can determine that this is a defect, they would be able to get the problem fixed for free. My car btw, is a 2006 and is still under warranty until march.

Have you guys ever heard or experience this problem? The tire roar/noise is almost unbearable.

Here is a link on tires

What brand and type of tires on on your vehicle?

Do you check your tire pressure regularly with a decent quality gauge?

I just replaced my Bridgestone Turanza 235-45-18 with 52715 miles and 5/32 left on them on Tuesday.

The problem is with the Toe. Gs are toed in by design. This means that the tires are dragging slightly. Couple that with the negative front camber and you get feathering.

Actually, I just had to throw on some back up tires on the front of my coupe because the inner tread on the driver's side just ripped off. I'm used to feathering, but this looked like the tire "had it" and let go of about 1/2" worth of tread. Steel wires were hanging out despite the rest of the tire having 4-5/32 of tread.

If you're ok giving up handling, I'd have the car aligned with as little toe in as possible.

I have Toyo Proxes. They are extremely new still I check my tire pressure once every month. I've been complaining about a "roaring" noise coming from the tires a few months back. I couldn't believe none of the mechanics were able to spot the problem. Right when the guy who rotated my tires told me about the problem... I knew right away that was the source of the noise. This sucks!!!! Sentient, you're use to feathering? How could you possibly stand that noise? Dang, so the wires were starting to show? That is insane!

I'm used to it, because it's part of having a performance car. Go talk to the EVO and STI owners. They're tires last 12k if they're lucky.

That's what I got on my old I30 with Z rated tires and on that car I could actually rotate my tires.

You have a coupe right? How are you rotating your tires? I thought all coupes had staggered wheels and tires...

Also, I'm used to Bridgestones and AWEFUL tire noise. They have some of the stiffest sidewall though, so one trade-off for another. Tire noise isn't bad on smooth pavement, but can be brutal on this course concrete crap that CALTRANS has put on some of our Freeways.

TOE IN doesn't cause feathering, TOE OUT does. The Technical Service Bulletin for the Z says to set toe in to maximum range of .008 or 2mm. If you have directional tires, have them flipped and remounted so the feathering is on the outside. The place that wheel and tire on the opposite side since the direction is going the other way. If they aren't directional, rotate the wheel to other side of the car. Have the alignment checked and like I said, have the front toe in set to max. This will help with some of the issue, but will not completely solve it.

Sorry. I was misinformed by a parts person. I still believe this is mostly due to the negative camber.

Camber only wears tires faster on the inside if too much negative camber. TOE will destroy tires, quickly. Too much toe out, feathering. Too much toe in, damage to outside of tread.

I run -2.0 degrees camber up front and toe set to max in and it helps tremendously with tire feathering. I also run asymmetrical tires. Rotating the tires every 3-5k miles is a good idea as well.

The multilink suspension setup is sensitive, so potholes and speedbumps and roadkill throw off alignment after just 15,000 miles or so. I need to align my car... maybe.
