Like the title says. Are the turbine housing for the hy35 and hx35 the same?

Not really. There are numerous different sized turbine housings for both turbos with the hy having smaller housings than the hx.

I was always curious of how to determine the turbine housing.

I think the wheel is the same between the turbo's, but the way it bolts to the center section is different. And of course the HY is smaller a/r. The HX35's are in a bunch of different sizes as mentioned before.

well i was looking at the bullseye stainless turbine housings and i found a cheap hy35 so i thought i would ask. So a hx turbine housing wont bolt up to an hy? would the hx35 be a good match for the rb20?

This is just opinion, but I think a HX35 is at the upper end of street-able for a stock RB20. It would be perfect for me. I cruise/drag/occasional twisties for fun, but it depends on your application. Just a guess, but I'd say 1 bar or better by around 4k rpm with the proper sized housing (12cm-14cm T3). That's just a ballpark guess. The DSM guys are spinning HX35's in the mid to upper 3k's on a 2L though, so maybe quicker.

Think T3/T04e spool times with a turbo capable of 400-450rwhp (not saying it'll make that on a RB20).

Maybe. That's a pretty small housing (I've heard around .55 a/r'ish), but it might do it. High 300's for sure though.

What do you plan to do with the car? Just street drive it and and make good power? HX35--you have the ability to change exh. housings and make it into a HX35/40 hybrid later. If you really need every bit of spool for autocross and gymkhana type stuff, HY35.

Are you bolting this to a stock manifold?

and meet07, it's stamped inside of the ex housing right inside where the runner would bolt to the manifold

Im just gonna street drive it and probably do some drag racing. I might try drifting a little bit but probably not much. Im gonna bolt it to the S tec manifold with an external gate. Also is the hx35w the same as the hx35?

Yeah, I'd look at an HX35 than. The HX35W vs the HX35 is internal wastegated vs you needing an external one. I might have that backwards, but I don't think so. Just look at the housing before you buy it, but either will work for you since you are going external.

Also, know that the Stec mannies are made for RHD cars over here in japan, so you might have to chop and re-weld the wastegate runners to fit.

well the one im looking at is internally gated but im just gonna remove the actuator and weld the flap shut and use the external gate that comes with the stec manifold. So will the hx35 get me to 400whp and not be extremely laggy? If so thats what i'll be getting

Yup, that's what I said. It's like a 9cm I believe.

And it's a 400rwhp capable turbo. I've never seen a 400hp RB20. I'm not saying they can't be built, I've just never seen one, and I don't know what it takes. The turbo is good for it though, and it won't be laggy (unless you are expecting stock spool times).

Get a flickr or photobucket account. You'll need it, and it'll explain how to upload. You can just link pics if they are already on the internet. Where did you get it? What size ex housing is on it?

Looks great! Brand new to boot. I've got a compressor housing and wheel from a HX40 if you ever decide you want a hybrid like mine was. Did you ever see the vids of mine?
