Does anyone know what this hole is called or what purpose it serves? I am leaking anitfreeze from one on the underside of my waterpump. Can i plug it up maybe or do i need a new one?

That is a weep hole, its there to let you know the seal is starting to go bad on the water pump. Basically its telling you to get a new water pump before you wreck the motor, pretty neat design actually

yeah, if its leaking there get a new water pump ASAP, i found out the hard way, i was on my way to Jasper from houston, about 2 hour drive, before i left, i stoped to get gas and saw a little leak coming from there, so i thaught ok well ill check it out when i get home, and i didnt make it but like 30 miles down the highway and i nolonger have any compression ocross all four cylenders. In the middle of a rebuild right now.

Ive been driving with it leaking for a couple of months but they havent been long drives. About 15-25 min to work and other such places. Every few days i would top off the anitfreeze and it hasnt given me a problem. I havent taken the car on long drive yet and I know not to. Im in the process of replacing it now.

When replacing the water pump, its a good idea to go ahead and replace the thermostat, belts, and hoses. This way you know its done and you won't have to do the same basic teardown to get to the thermostat. Make sure you flush your radiator as well. I learned the hard way because I didn't replace the hoses. 2 days later they burst and there I was again taking everything apart and doing the job right.
