I'm currently not registered to vote, and I'm kicking myself for it. I foolishly forgot about voting when I moved last year, and now I'm having to pay the consequence: I don't get to vote in this election where I'd like to do nothing more. But, now I'm starting to see it as a kind of opportunity. I had previously been registered as an Independent, and I'm not sure I want to go that way. With an eye towards an eventual career somewhere in Washington, D.C., it might behoove me to pick a side.
But which side to pick? If we all agree to ignore the dead-ends that are third parties, I'm sure a bunch of you would say that I'm a sure thing for the Democratic Party, and you may be right. The Democratic Party is a glorious mess of uncoordination and discombobulation that just about anybody can be a sure thing for the Democratic Party. Additionally, I don't work well with others, and I've never taken kindly to marching orders, and so an organization as rigid and organized as the Republican Party might not be the right place for me. Plus, I can pass Democratic litmus tests a lot better than I can pass Republican litmus tests, but it's not a perfect fit on either side.
On the other hand, the Republican Party, being far more organized, has a lot more potential for consistent control. And where I do disagree with them on policy matters, I can't imagine a better place to do so constructively than from within their own ranks. After all, if the NRA has a million members, gun rights advocates need only show up to their next meeting with two million.
One downside to being an independent in CT was that I had no say in either of the major primaries. So choosing one party would allow me to help choose which candidates get nominated to election. Do I want to pick my Democratic candidate and hope that Republicans come up with something not-crazy? Do I want to pick a Republican candidate in the hopes that they're not crazy in order to give myself more than one option come November?
I don't know. I've got another two years to figure this out, so I'm in no rush to decide today. If you guys had the opportunity to re-choose your party affiliation (technically you can change it any time, but I feel like suddenly being without a registration is a special motivator to choose), what would figure into your thought process?
