I was looking for one to put a tray on to carry tires for a day at the track

I also have a sea kayak and was looking to make a back tree to hold the back of the boat up bc the roof is so small

because sometimes we need to use our cars for things other than fun, and we cant always afford 2 cars.

To me, a hitch tells me that the owner really didnt want to have to sell his car.

you gotta do what you gotta do. But aren't U-Haul truck prices getting cheaper? When I moved, my dad rented one of those mid sized uhauls for like, 30 bucks a day. I dunnu, I saw MikeMurphy's pic and there was damage to the bumper. Oh well, like pearlywhite95 said, you gotta do what you gotta do. I'd rather rent. Just humble my opinion.

the price for a 10x15' truck with the trailer to tow my car is over $1.900. and they get about 10 miles to the gallon and im driving about 2400 miles.

I've towed cross country in my '95. Get the 4x6, the 5x8 is too hard on the 240. I will admit that i have towed over 2,000 lbs in a 5x8( at least 2,850 lb total) but i wouldn't do it again!! Drive 60mph max and keep out of overdrive

Wow you guys are nutts, hahaha. I don't know if I would be towing that much with the 240.

I moved from AZ to TX and the uhaul truck was about $800. So I just bought a hitch ($150) and rented a trailer for it ($250) and towed all my stuff and threw the rest in the bed. BTW this was on a 98' trd V6 Tacoma, I pulled the 5x8 and jam packed that ****. IT weighed over 3k lbs easily. With the bed loaded and the trailer and goods in it i was pulling apprx: 3900lbs.

Anyway, I know you can easily exceed any rating any manual says without anything bad happening but towing a packed 5x8 for 2400 miles may not be a good idea. Now that I have my s14 I don't think Id ever tow more than about 2000 lbs with it. Good luck though!

The 240 has u-joints(i think) for the rear independent and the towing limit is 1,000 lb.A truck would have less problems since its a solid axle. The 5x8 weighs 850lbs and is 7- 8 feet high from the ground . The 4x8 weighs 700lb and is 6 feet high from the ground. The higher you are, the more drag your going to have besided the added weight. Uhaul does have a 5x8 "low-boy" it's shorter in high then the 5x8, but gives you more room then the 4x8. There are companies that will ship your goods (5x8 worth of stuff) for $600. Maybe spending $160 for a hitch, $250 for the trailer(4x8) and $600 for a moving company would be the cheapest Cheaper still would be to get a 5x8 utility trailer for $500, put up some stakes/paneling and put a tarp on top and sell it when you get there .......instead of renting a 5x8 ($350 +)

i never looked into having it shipped? its crazy here every thing seems to be double in price than what it should. the trailer was going to be any where from 495.00 to 795.00. also do you think that towing that trailer 2000+ miles would be really harsh on my car??? thanks again for that detailed info sideshow. i really appriciate it

What are you talking abotu U-joints for the rear independent??Yes a 240 has a twi peice driveshaft with a U in the middle, and has IRS... Yes a truck with a solid rear is genrally stronger load wise.

I agree with sideshow though about buying then selling. Its crazy what some places want to rent a fuggin trailer/truck. Going 2400+ miles I think would definetly be to much for a 240sx towing 2000+ lbs.

Why? Because you will most definetly be traveling through lots of different conditions when covering that distance. The load that pulling 2k+ puts on a small motor like that is very great. Its not winter anymore so its not cool out everywhere. You may possibly have overheating issues, and could possibly even have rod bearing, ring land issues to. Trust me tryign to pull double the weight of a ~stock 240sx up hills in any gear is a LOT for the lil KA...

Not only that but you will have to be VERY careful of crosswinds when traveling; any wind for that matter! A huge box behind yoru car that weighs just about as much as it can persuade the car to go places you do not want it to.

I am jsut tryign to give advice from my experience. I never had trouble pulling the weight with my trucks, but everythign else still applies. The factory recommendations usually are not waht the car can handle, its probably more geared towards what a driver can handle with that car. I can tell you right now that there is NO way that Uhaul will rent a 5x8 trailer to you if you go to pick it up in that. THey have regulations as well, and having a factory weight of ~2800 lbs is NOT going to be enough for them to let you take it. There is NO waiver you can sign either. U will either have to pick it up with a buddies truck or something, or get a smaller one.

My 4x4, V6 fully loaded Tacoma with everything was over 3500lbs, but since their "majic book" told them its factory weightwas like 3480 I could not take the 6x10.
