What are you talking abotu U-joints for the rear independent??Yes a 240 has a twi peice driveshaft with a U in the middle, and has IRS... Yes a truck with a solid rear is genrally stronger load wise.
I agree with sideshow though about buying then selling. Its crazy what some places want to rent a fuggin trailer/truck. Going 2400+ miles I think would definetly be to much for a 240sx towing 2000+ lbs.
Why? Because you will most definetly be traveling through lots of different conditions when covering that distance. The load that pulling 2k+ puts on a small motor like that is very great. Its not winter anymore so its not cool out everywhere. You may possibly have overheating issues, and could possibly even have rod bearing, ring land issues to. Trust me tryign to pull double the weight of a ~stock 240sx up hills in any gear is a LOT for the lil KA...
Not only that but you will have to be VERY careful of crosswinds when traveling; any wind for that matter! A huge box behind yoru car that weighs just about as much as it can persuade the car to go places you do not want it to.
I am jsut tryign to give advice from my experience. I never had trouble pulling the weight with my trucks, but everythign else still applies. The factory recommendations usually are not waht the car can handle, its probably more geared towards what a driver can handle with that car. I can tell you right now that there is NO way that Uhaul will rent a 5x8 trailer to you if you go to pick it up in that. THey have regulations as well, and having a factory weight of ~2800 lbs is NOT going to be enough for them to let you take it. There is NO waiver you can sign either. U will either have to pick it up with a buddies truck or something, or get a smaller one.
My 4x4, V6 fully loaded Tacoma with everything was over 3500lbs, but since their "majic book" told them its factory weightwas like 3480 I could not take the 6x10.
