pop distributor cap and spray the hell out of it with wd40, that is what it is for WD stands for water dispersant, that is a usual thing when water gets under hood. Dry and spray and pop back on if that is not it check intake track and hope water did not get in it. if so dry it all out and try cranking it again.

Both my 87 and now my 97 do the same thing - mostly when it's raining, snowing, or if I go mudding. People keep telling me it's the distributor cap, and you can go ahead and seal it, but it's not the problem. It's probably not water in the intake either.

It's an electrical gremlin, that's for sure. I can see him loosening my lugnuts on rainy days. People tell me I'm crazy, and that he isn't real, but I swear he is pulling wires or something.

One thing I have in mind is the fuel pump is getting shorted out on the gas tank - the top of the tank has some exposed connectors, but I'm not sure. It only happens when it's really wet. If I were to ford a stream, it wold certainly run like total s***.

I would like to know once and for all what this is, but I dought anyone really knows, because I have been living with this for years. I'll let you know if I ever find anything out.

Should I mention I no longer have my passenger side Splash shield?

I don't think the splash shield has anything to do with this, but I'm not sure.

It feels to me like a break in fuel pressure. Fuel injection instantly quits when the fuel pressure drops off, and that's what it feels like is happening. That's why I mentioned the fuel pump connectors on top of the tank (under the bed).

It could even be a relay somewhere, and maybe bypassing this relay, and hardwiring the fuel pump (with a fuse of course) would fix the problem, I don't know. I don't even know if the fuel pump has a relay - I'm just exploring this in my head.

I disconnected the FP and it started up for 30 seconds then died then I hooked it back up and it ran fine just coughing water out of the cat.. My muffler is no longer hooked up to my cat due to the bolts breaking could it be killing the engine to be getting water in the cat?

I don't know about that. Sometimes, if the cat is hot, hitting some water sends a cloud of steam out, probably cooling tha cat off pretty fast, but I don't know if that would stall the engine. I'm guessing no.
