I have a 2009 QX56.

My previous car was a 2004 BMW X5 3.0 and it had Hill Descent Control (HDC). I live on a hill and when it snows, the HDC was very handy for going down the snowy/icy hill as all I had to do was push the HDC button and just steer with foot ready for braking. It would easily creep down the hill at 5 mph, etc. easily.

The QX56 doesn't seem to have it but I remember reading somewhere that you just shift into 2nd, or 1st and it would be the same thing cuz it uses lower gear and/or engine braking.

I had the opportunity to test it out the other day during a one day snow storm and it didn't seem to help any by shifting to 2nd, 1st, etc. I had to keep braking as I was still going too fast. I had the selector on 4H if that matters.

Whats the proper technique in doing so for the QX56? Should I be selecting 4auto or 4L, etc.? I want to be better prepare for the next time, instead of slipping downhill onto traffic.

Thanks in advance,Sith

Personally I have not played with this on mine, but I would suggest 4Lo.

The VDC works with either 4 auto or manually selecting 4WD (high range). You can shift into 1st to help reduce speed or just use the brake and the VDC will compensate. When you select 4lo I believe that turns off the VDC but locks all 4 wheels into 4WD lo and it will creep very slowly in 1st if you manually select 1st.
