I have a 1995 Maxima with 301,00 mile on it. It runs great, but the AC sucks. If I am driving down the highway the AC blows cold, but if I am stuck in traffic or just sitting at idle the AC does not blow cold air.I have had this problem since I bought the car and it seems to be getting worse. I have taken it to the Nissan dealership and various other places and they say that it is working the way it should. The last guy actually pumped all the freon out and then pumped it back in. It always shows the right pressure, but just does not cool. The last guy that looked at it suggested that the flapper/diverter may not be cl;osing all the way at idle and this could be allowing air off of the heater core to mis with the cold air resulting in no cold AC.This seems to be a common problem with the nissans that I have owned. I had an 89 Pathfinder with 300,000+ miles on it that had the same problem. At least my 91 M30 has awesome AC so far.Has anybody else experienced this problem and if so how did you fix it?

301k miles, wow! That speaks mounds to the durability of these cars.

I haven't had any problems with my AC. Usually when I first turn on the AC, I'll hit the recirculate button until it cools down; then go back to fresh air.

To see if you are within normal perameters, get a thermometer with a probe on it (looks like a meat thermometer) and follow these instructions.

Its probably your compressor..... You also should try adjusting the compressor to its maximum stroke... but likely it is the compressor if the system is charged correctly... Either that or your fans are not cooling the condensor good enough...

until you post some readings from the manifold gauge its hard to say.

The last guy I took it to said the readings ranged from 43 deg. to 58 deg. The higher temp was after the thermostat opened up.If the car is sitting in the shade, it seems to cool batter, but if I am sitting still in the wide open the car does not cool at all. This problem has been consisent for at least the last 5 yrs. I have taken it to varrious shops including the Nisaan dealership and they tell me that the readings are correct and it is working. I have yet to have somebody test it in the sun.

I dont care what the vent readings are at... I need the PRESSURES of the high and low side..... You should compare the pressure after being warm and just switched on and then after a highway drive.....

For instance, drive the car without the AC for a while and then hook your manifold guages up then turn the AC on... See what its at, my guess is the high and low sides may not be high enough, but for sure the high side wont be high enough if its doing what Im thinking.

Can you tell by listening when the compressor is on? Besides the solenoid clicking? Meaning that if I closed your ears so you couldnt hear it click on, could you tell if the compressor is on? Sometimes when nissan compressors are iffy they will sound like theyre a diesel motor... Not loud but you can tell when theyre running... and you shouldnt be able to tell so much.....
